PSYCH at Comic-Con 2013: Live-Blog

July 18, 2013 by

At 1:00 PM PT, I’ll be live-blogging the PSYCH panel at Comic-Con. Be sure to check back here then (and keep refreshing for the latest) to see what’s in store for next season with our favorite fake psychic detectives.

In the meantime, here is what the official panel description says: “For the fifth year running, cable TV’s most beloved fake psychic detective series is bringing its signature brand of humor, pop culture nostalgia and delicious flavor to Comic-Con. Fans will get a unique, interactive peek behind the pineapple as the show’s creative team discuss Psych‘s long-anticipated musical episode and upcoming season, share exclusive video content, and take audience questions galore. The panel, moderated by Psych guest star and ‘80s icon and fan favorite Cary Elwes (Pierre Despereaux), features stars James Roday (Shawn Spencer), Dulé Hill (Burton “Gus” Guster), Maggie Lawson (Juliet O’Hara), Tim Omundson (Carlton Lassiter), Kirsten Nelson (Chief Karen Vick), and Corbin Bernsen (Henry Spencer), as well as producers Steve Franks (creator and executive producer), Kelly Kulchak (executive producer), and Chris Henze (executive producer). Hilarious hijinks are highly likely to ensue.”

1:07: Starting off with a season 7 sizzle reel and a season 8 preview!

1:11: Corbin doesn’t have a seat, so he’s sitting on the side of the stage while they do the rest of the cast intros.

1:15: Cary is very, very, very, very into this moderating gig. He’s telling people to make sure to use the #PsychSDCC hashtag.

1:17: James has finally joined Twitter! He just tweeted his first tweet here. And now Steve is joining, too! “I just want to show for the record, I’m the only one not tweeting right now,” Dule jokes.

1:19: Maggie would want Alicia Silverstone to play her in a hypothetical movie. Timothy wants Hal Holbrook. Corbin says David Sole. Kirsten says Angela Landsbury.

1:21: “I think fans will be happy,” Maggie says of Juliet-Shawn. But she notes it’s going to be a journey next season.

1:24: If Shawn was creating a mixtape for the road, what would it be? James mentions Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, and maybe some new Curt Smith music (which was prompted by Dule).

1:25: Dule is trying to name as many Gus nicknames as possible. “This is embarrassing! This is absolutely embarrassing,” he says after only being able to name a few.

1:27: And the fan vote for one of the bonus episodes goes to: “Dream Therapy”! The new title is “Nightmare on State Street.”

1:29: James and Dule just performed part of a song from the upcoming PSYCH musical! Check back soon for some video footage from that.

1:33: Why take so long to do a musical? They wanted to get it right, Steve admits. He recalls they started talking about it at the end of the pilot, but they also realized they wouldn’t actually have time for it until like season 7. Steve directed it, but was massively impressed — and praising — of the entire cast and crew for helping to get it done.

1:36: What props do they wish they could steal? Kirsten says her favorite prop is her Chief badge. Timothy loves his fake gun, but notes they aren’t fond of people crossing the border with stolen guns. Maggie would take her Juliet nameplate. James says he would take one of the frog props, but he notes it’s kind of broken. Dule wants the Blueberry. Steve wants Corbin. Kelly wants the chair they made for her that was misspelled and said “executed producer” instead of “executive producer.” Chris says he wants the whole PSYCH office.

1:39: Will we get more badass Shawn? James says we’ll actually get more badass GUS this year.

1:41: A Guy Ritchie movie-London-Harry Potter-Cary Elwes mix episode is coming: “Lock, Stocks and Smoking Barells and Burton Guster’s Goblet of Fire”! Um, amazing.

1:42: James also pointed to another season 8 awesome idea: they’re redoing an episode they’ve already done. It was rewritten by Andy Berman and features a bunch of PSYCH all-stars.

1:46: How did the pineapple gag begin? They reiterate it was an improv by James in the pilot.

1:47: Why did the logo go from blue to green? The network changed it as some point and it stuck.

1:49: Poor Kirsten is explaining how to pronounce her name. Timothy says when crew members mispronounce it for the 700th time by calling her Kristin, he likes to go, “Or Kirsten.”

1:51: “This episode is going to blow your mind because it’s hard…it’s a love song to PSYCH,” Kirsten says of her first directing experience.

1:52: A wee child just told the cast she and her family love the show and loves the “suck it” the most. she asks the cast to give their best version of it. Dule and James have a “suck it”-off, and it’s pretty much everything you could hope for.

1:54: Why does Gus start eating so much last season? Dule jokes Gus has a fast metabolism, and the cast jokes it’s art, imitating life, since Dule always has a sandwich in his hand.

1:57: “Well, on one, I say ‘Mr President’ a lot. On one I say, ‘SHAWN!'” Dule says of the differences between working on THE WEST WING and PSYCH.

1:59: At the end of the panel, James got more followers than Steve.  (Be sure to follow them both!)

2:00: Cary pitches a Despereaux spinoff and Steve likes the idea!

2:03: They just showed us a preview of next season’s PSYCH Outs, and there is a ton of singing, botched lines, and bloopers.

2:05: And that’s it! Thanks for joining us!

No mention if this final season or not?

@David: Unfortunately, no. It was a fun panel, but in terms of the news things that should have been addressed (final season/musical premiere date/clarification on Maggie’s status on the show), none of them were dealt with, really. (Steve wanted to announce the premiere date for the musical, he was told he couldn’t.)

    Thank you for the coverage

Thanks so much for this Marisa. Global TV has just started to air Season 7 here in Canada (it’s filmed here but not all of the seasons were aired here…strange and sad…thank goodness for DVDs!) and it remains one of my all-time favourite shows! (You know that’s right!)
