PERSON OF INTEREST: Sarah Shahi and Greg Plageman Preview Shaw’s Season 5 Return

PERSON OF INTEREST has officially pinned down the return of Sarah Shahi’s Shaw.

“Sarah Shahi should be back by episode 5,” PERSON OF INTEREST co-showrunner Greg Plageman shared. “She’s a trooper man, she’s doing a lot. But she’s ready to go, she says I want to be back, and we’re very excited to have her.”

On the show, Shaw went MIA after she sacrificed herself to save Team Machine. Initially, she was presumed dead, but viewers have seen brief glimpses of Shaw — clearly not right — in the months since. (Shaw’s temporary exit was crafted to accommodate Shahi’s real-life pregnancy.)

And though PERSON OF INTEREST isn’t on CBS’ fall schedule, the airdate limbo could serve to bring back Shahi earlier than planned.

“We could actually see her even earlier,” Plageman shared. “In the production [she’s filming episode 5]. We have a very flexible air date schedule, so we may monkey with that.”

For her part, Shahi is equally excited to return to PERSON OF INTEREST.

“I’m excited,” Shahi gushed. “I did this episode of RAY DONOVAN not too long ago. It was good to get my feet wet. I’m very excited. I know very little [about what’s going to happen], even after talking with Greg for an hour, I know very little. They keep promising Shaw is coming back with a bang. And [asking] if I’m ready for the amount of work they’re going to give me. And I am. I’m ready to get back. The way Shaw ended, it didn’t feel right — it felt there was so much more story. She just had a lot more road to go down, and I think we’re going to go down this year.”

One of the unresolved stories? The complicated relationship between Shaw and Amy Acker’s Root.

“I know what the fans want; I think it’s important to give the fans what they want, because I feel like they’ve been down that Root and Shaw journey for so long,” Shahi acknowledged. “They got a kiss last year, which is good. We’ll see what this year brings. I love working with Amy. She and I feel very mutually about each other, so I hope we get to flirt with that dynamic.”

Aside from that, Shahi has a pitch for how Shaw should return…albeit one that probably won’t end up on-screen.

“The thing I keep pitching is I want Shaw to shave her head, on-camera,” Shahi laughed. “Be a full-on half-cyborg with the bionic arm that’s like an automatic machine gun. Another thing was like, oh, she should be Team Samaritan. Maybe she’s Team Samaritan…who knows? But I still go for the TERMINATOR aspect and the hair and bionic arm — that’s what I want to do.”

No matter what happens, Shahi shared her gratitude for the fan support.

“I want to say thank you so much,” she said. “I had no idea that Shaw would have this kind of impact on people. And while I was at home, on bed rest, and then living in a fog for the last five months, it’s just so nice to know people are still ready to have me back on television. I just want to say to the fans, thank you so much. I wouldn’t be able to have a career without them, I wouldn’t be able to support my family.”

I hope next interview will be with Acker. I want to know what’s in store for Root and if she’ll appear in 13 episodes out of 13. That’s far more important because they’ve been treating her character like s**t for the past two seasons, like if she wasn’t the part of the show or important. And it’s bad given how little female characters they have.

Can we have at least this one presumably last season about Root? Not about Shoot or Reese’s manpain™? Please?
All of them; Shaw, Reese, Finch and, of course Carter, have had a lot of episodes centered on them, Root barely had one or two. She deserves better.

Such a relief! The first few shows after her departure were amazing, especially as Root went a little crazier in the Search for Shaw, but the second half of Season 4 kind of petered out a bit, especially with episodes like Karma and Blunt, which might’ve been saved if Shaw’s dry sense of humor had been around. It did pick up again in the end, when they returned to the Samaritan storyline, but now knowing Shaw is back full time I feel such relief.

  10. CAN WE PLEASE GET JOSS CARTER BACK??!! on August 12th, 2015 2:00 am

I was never a fan of Shaw. Instead of her they should have tried to get Carter back (a character which is STILL MISSED by millions of fans).

I know she is filming Empire right now, but for 2/3 episodes they should definetely try to bring her back, too!!!!

I still really don’t get what’s so special about Sarah Shahi, i really don’t!

Taraji was so much more interesting as a character and actress.

SO COME ON CBS NOLAN PLAGEMAN DO SOMETHING FOR YOUR OTHER FANS: BRING BACK JOSS CARTER FOR A FEW EPISODES.

    That would be fantastic!!!

  11. Lin on August 12th, 2015 2:11 am

^^^ joss carter is dead and THEY DID bring her back for flashbacks in episode 20 in season 4, why on earth would they waste their potential final 13 episodes on a dead character? They can’t physically bring her back from the dead it’s not that kind of show, joss is also not relevent to the storyline. I loved joss but it’s been years, get over it.

  12. CAN WE PLEASE GET JOSS CARTER BACK??!! on August 12th, 2015 8:55 am

Why not? Expect the unexpected. It’s television.

(Unexpected things like this is what MADE this show ONCE so very special).

And for me there cannot be a final season without the character of Joss Carter!!!
    No way!

I personally have zero interest in watching 13 episodes dealing with Samaritan Shaw and her relationship with Root. That’s a complete waste of episodes for me to be honest.

And please don’t tell me to get over it. That’s insulting. I just commented that i would love to see Joss Carter again for two/three more episodes. That woman is never a WASTE of time and always relevant. And just because you mentioned her Flashback episode: That wasn’t a flashback, but a hallucination. There’s s difference.
