SPLITTING UP TOGETHER and THE ROOKIE

SPLITTING UP TOGETHER – “Contact High” – Frazzled from her intimate dream with Martin, Lena accidentally injures her tooth and reluctantly goes to the dentist. To help calm her nerves, a patient offers her herbal medication, but things don’t turn out as expected when she finds herself feeling loopy. Meanwhile, Martin once again puts plans with Paige on hold to escort Lena to Mae’s parent-teacher conference after she inadvertently gets high. Elsewhere, Maya surprisingly asks a familiar face out on a date, and he reluctantly accepts, on ABC’s “Splitting Up Together,” TUESDAY, JAN. 8 (9:30-10:00 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. Let’s talk about Tuesday night TV!

SPLITTING UP TOGETHER: The Lena/Martin relationship is by far the best and worst aspect of the show. When the not-quite couple are flat-out feuding, it can be incredibly uncomfortable to watch. But when they’re friendly (regardless of whether they’re being flirty or not), that’s when the show gels. Last night’s episode was probably one of my favorites of the season as Lena got high and things spiraled waaaaaay out of control after having an accidentally erotic dream about Martin. And now they’re both single again…

THE ROOKIE: I think most of us probably would like to think we’d be a badass if a shootout between cops and bad guys happened in our home. But, man, Eugene Byrd‘s fabulously frustrated guest star character who just really wanted to know who was going to pay for all the mayhem is a MOOD. (And how great was it to see Byrd? He’s such an underrated actor.)

Not sure how I feel about John deciding to lie about being alone/being the one to take out the intruder, though Lucy was right: she’d get in a ton of trouble. It felt pretty predictable that Nolan would prove himself during the shootout and they’d drop the investigation into his potential lie, but it still feels like a short-sighted move. They’re playing with fire and I was kind of hoping the Lucy/John relationship would mostly be buried. I’m not entirely sure if this newfound friendship is laying the groundwork for a romantic reunion or the writers really are trying to start that friendship from the ground up.
