Cat Deeley - So You Think You Can Dance

Updated Results: Looking to find out who got voted off SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE tonight? Find out here: Who Went Home on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE (July 9, 2009)

PREVIOUS POST:

I really have no idea what to expect from tonight’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE results show. With the passing of Michael Jackson just hours ago, I have to assume that some time will be spent dedicated to a man who was so influential to the art of dance. But the results shows usually don’t leave much time for anything but the results and the musical act. And short of bumping The Veronica’s, I don’t know that they’ll have much time for a proper tribute. I guess we’ll soon find out.

As I do each week, I’ll be live blogging the highlights from tonight’s episode. If you’re watching on the East Coast I hope you’ll share your thoughts throughout the show in the comments below.

9:00pm: Now that’s an opening number.  Talk about sultry and hot, hot, hot! Well done Dmitry and NappyTabs!  And how about Cat Deeley popping up from behind the dancers? God I love this woman!

9:04pm: As expected, Nigel addresses the death of Michael Jackson.  But he also pays tribute to Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett. To MJ – “I don’t know where you even begin to describe a global superstar like Michael Jackson.”

Let’s not forget the personal connection Wade Robson has had with Michael Jackson his whole life.  Jackson discovered Wade. Despite the controversy surrounding their personal connection there was no denying that it was because of Michael Jackson that we’ve had the pleasure of knowing the artist that is Wade Robson.

Here’s a young Wade on Star Search, paying homage to his idol.

And here he is later in life, still honoring his mentor.

9:12pm: It’s results time.

  • Auska and Vitolio – BOTTOM THREE
  • Janette and Brandon – SAFE
  • Randi and Evan – SAFE
  • Jeanine and Philip – SAFE
  • Melissa and Ade – SAFE

So far so good. Who will be joining Auska and Vitolio?

  • Karla and Jonathan – BOTTOM THREE
  • Caitlin and Jason – BOTTOM THREE
  • Kayla and Kupono – SAFE

Those are the couples I predicted to be in the bottom three tonight. I’m not doing well in my SYTYCD Fantasty League though.  I had Auska and Kupono going home tonight.  Here’s to hoping it is Auska for the girls.  I’ve never connected with her.  I don’t know why the judges love her so much.

Looking forward to the solos.  Especially my boy Jason’s!

9:29pm: The Rage Boys Crew take the stage.  Cat nearly eats them with a spoon. How frakking adorable is that little one? Future SYTYCDancers.  Love it! Holy WOW, did you see that kid being tossed like a bag of chips into the air?!  Cat Deeley is brought to her knees!

9:36pm: Auska is first up for her solo.  I didn’t think it was impressive in the least.

9:37pm: Vitolio’s leaps are amazing, but he might have jumped around a little too much.  I find his solos so interesting to watch!

9:38pm: Karla’s solo is definitely better than Auska’s but it felt a little unfinished in parts to me.

9:39pm: Talk about dancing for your life…Jonathan really is. His gymnastics were fun but I don’t think it was enough to impressive the judges.  What is his specialty…besides making me smile?

9:43pm: We’e back from the break and the final two dancers are taking the stage.

Caitlin will be staying with us after that number. Or at least she shoudl. She definitely out danced the other two girls.

9:44pm: The final solo of the night was my boy Jason.  Unless he really bites it, he’s not going home tonight. And he doesn’t. God, I love watching the guy dance! Well done SYTYCD BF 2009!

It’s time for the judges to decide who is going home.  Based on tonight, it should be Auska and Jonathan.  Fingers crossed.

9:46pm: The Veronicas take the stage.  And I take a water break.

After last week’s lip synching disaster, it’s nice to have people actually singing live. I can’t say that I was all that impressed by the music, but that’s ok…I have strange musical taste sometimes. I’m not hip. This I know.

9:53pm: One of the ladies is going home tonight.  Caitlin is safe right away. It’s down to Karla and Auska.  And in a somewhat shocking (but awesome) moment, the judges send Auska home.  Interestingly enough, none of the othr dancers looked to broken up by it.

9:54pm: Yikes…my computer just crashed.  Right before one of the boys are sent packing.  FAIL!  Sorry about that.  Cutting right to the chase…the judges decide it’s the end of the road for Jonathan.  Aww, bye you cutie patootie.

Let’s hear it one more time for Auska and Jonathan.  And for me for earning some much needed SYTYCD fantasy league points.

Until next week!!

Did the right dancers go home?  Talk to me!

NOTE: Cat Deeley has announced that for the first time in the 8 year history of AMERICAN IDOL, Fox will be rebroadcasting an episode.  Watch on Monday at 8pm as this year’s Top 13 take the stage on Michael Jackson night. (SPOILER ALERT…Kris Allen wins!)

I love how Cat materialized from the group of dancers! She is one gorgeous lady, and I thought her dress last night (and tonight) was simply stunning!!

  2. Tim G. on June 25th, 2009 9:11 pm

What an amazing opening number followed by a lovely tribute by Nigel.

  3. ClioBC on June 25th, 2009 9:12 pm

I disagree with NIgel – it was the one two punch of the Motown 25th celebration show and the Billie Jean video that broke everything wide open, musically and dance wise. Thriller was what cemented his brilliance.

  4. Vanessa on June 25th, 2009 9:16 pm

I am really hoping Auska gets the boot tonight. There is just something about her that annoys me.

  5. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:18 pm

How in the world do you know video’s like that one exist.

    — so far I agree with the voting… but chbeeb needs to go next week, he’s the weakest of the remaining men at trying anything outside his unique style

  6. Give Me My Remote on June 25th, 2009 9:20 pm

I know that Philip has a strong fanbase, but it’s going to be a shame if his popularity keep him in the competition at the expense of better dancers.

  7. Kimber on June 25th, 2009 9:21 pm

I do like Vitolio, but I’m in the same boat as Vanessa – something about Auska really annoys me too … don’t know what, but I wouldn’t be crushed if she went home.

  8. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:21 pm

for me asuka seems plastic… her talent seems ok on the surface, but there is just something missing

  9. Lisa (aka lmr) on June 25th, 2009 9:22 pm

    nicely done Nigel

  10. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:26 pm

I still don’t see what the judges saw with jason and caitlin’s dance last night

  11. Vanessa on June 25th, 2009 9:29 pm

I agree with lise. I just was not so impressed. But I will be upset if Jason is not back next week!

I noticed this last night, but if Sarah Silverman was Asian, she would look exactly like Asuka.

I’m guessing Asuka & Jonathan will be going home.

  14. Patty on June 25th, 2009 9:32 pm

I would love it is Asuka and Jonathan go home. We’ll see after the solos if I change my mind.

  15. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:32 pm

to me Jonathan is clearly the weakest of the three men

  16. Kimber on June 25th, 2009 9:33 pm

OMG those kids are frakkin’ adorable. That little one? Wowsers. And some serious talent too! Btw – I totally thought Cat’s outfit was a dress! Was I really paying that little attention to the bottom to see that it’s a pantsuit? Still looks stunning on her, though.

  17. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:33 pm

it seems were all in agreement… now the judges need to not bleep it up

  18. Rae on June 25th, 2009 9:35 pm

Asuka is only going home if she flubs her solo. Nigel loves her.

  19. Lisa (aka lmr) on June 25th, 2009 9:35 pm

God the rage boys were cute and “Cat Deeley is brought to her knees!” my love for her never wanes.

i am praying Asuka is gone tonight,

  20. Tim G. on June 25th, 2009 9:38 pm

…why would Asuka dance to that misogynist piece of crap song?!

  21. Patty on June 25th, 2009 9:40 pm

Such a HUGE difference in energy between Asuka and Vitolio Carla. Asuka is going home.

  22. Vanessa on June 25th, 2009 9:40 pm

Not that I think it would have mattered much, but I think Jonathon should have stayed away from the gymnastics tricks this week. Nigel really does not seem to like them.

  23. Tim G. on June 25th, 2009 9:40 pm

I’ll give Jonathan this much, he looks dang good in that tank top.

  24. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:43 pm

I think the problem is when it becomes gymnastics connected by dance moves instead of dance with a gymnastic element

  25. Give Me My Remote on June 25th, 2009 9:43 pm

Someone just asked who Wade Robson was. It’s hard not to cut to the chase and say that he was the guy who broke up Britney and Justin! LOL

  26. Tim G. on June 25th, 2009 9:45 pm

Wow. I love the fact that Jason is dancing to Taking Back Sunday. Didn’t expect that.

  27. Kimber on June 25th, 2009 9:45 pm

I’m sorry, but Asuka has got to be going home tonight. Her routine bored me. I think all the guys were pretty fantastic, but if I had to choose … I’d say Jonathan.

  28. Patty on June 25th, 2009 9:45 pm

I am glad I don’t have to pick the guy after those solos

  29. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:46 pm

something about jason when he dances his own style is captivating

  30. ClioBC on June 25th, 2009 9:47 pm

I think Jonathan was clearly the weakest of the three dance-offs, but I think it’s too close to call between Caitlin and Asuka

  31. Tim G. on June 25th, 2009 9:54 pm

    Bus, meet Karla.
    Karla, meet bus.

  32. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:55 pm

yes!!! They got it right and judged on the dances not solely the physical attributes

  33. Kimber on June 25th, 2009 9:59 pm

Buh-bye Asuka. Jason looked like he was going to cry! So sad. Is it odd that he reminds me of Tracy Morgan?

  34. lise on June 25th, 2009 9:59 pm

    repeat my statement from above!

  35. Give Me My Remote on June 25th, 2009 10:06 pm

Ugh, I can’t believe my computer crashed right as the boys were being announced. Sorry for not being around for the very end!

Love that you guys are watching along…it makes live blogging SO much more fun!!

  36. Vanessa on June 25th, 2009 10:09 pm

I am satisfied with the dancers leaving, although I will miss Jonathon…he is just too cute! On a slightly separate note, is Wade rockin’ the mullet in the Star Search clip above?! Oh my…the 80s were just not good to hair.

  37. Alison on June 25th, 2009 11:16 pm

im really excited to see the American idol episode again! I miss them lol I need a refresher before the tour lol

  38. Kathy on June 26th, 2009 12:31 pm

The right people went home. I am looking forward to Vitolio dancing with someone better. And I could watch Jason dance forever. I was not waiting for his solo to end like the others.

Oh, and as soon as Jonathan threw in the gymnastics, I rolled my eyes, knowing he was heading home. Nice eye candy to watch, but just not “growing as a dancer” as Nigel puts it.
