Watch Along with GMMR…But What?!

December 29, 2009 by

I watch a lot of TV. I think you probably all know that by now. Given how many shows I watch there are obvious ones that I have missed. You know, the whole 24 hours in a day thing. Over the past few years I’ve caught up on two series that GMMR readers said are just can’t miss – BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and SUPERNATURAL. So glad I listened because my TV vocab wouldn’t be the same without these two incredible shows.

2010 starts off strong with a slew of new episodes from returning favorites as well as a launch of brand new series. But maybe, just maybe I have time to fit one new show into my schedule in the early part of the year. But what to watch? I know, I know, THE WIRE. I promise you I do want to take on that series, but I think it might be a little much given what other TV shows are on my plate come January. But I get to it, I promise.

I’ve decided that I’m going to start off the new Year with one of two critic/ fan favorites that somehow I missed when they were first on. It’s going to be either FIREFLY or FREAKS AND GEEKS. I’m going to let you vote and decide, but what I really want to know is who is going to watch along with me? Let me know which one YOU would be interested in watching and having a discussion about in the New Year. Once I know who is in, I’ll set up a viewing calendar. But first…what show will we be watching?

Joss Whedon’s FIREFLY or Judd Apatow’s FREAKS AND GEEKS? Use the comment section below to voice your opinion, and be sure to let me know if you’ll be watching along with me!

Firefly!! And then Freaks and Geeks. Both are amazing, but as a huge Joss fan I’m partial to Firefly.

  2. Jen on December 29th, 2009 5:09 pm

Well I just bought Firefly on DVD and I watched F&G this summer, so my vote is clearly for Firefly based on that very selfish reasoning.

  3. math dyslexia on December 29th, 2009 5:12 pm

    FREAKS AND GEEKS! You MUST!

  4. Calila on December 29th, 2009 5:13 pm

Freaks and Geeks….I’m full of James Franco love right now since he joined my favorite soap opera.

  5. Lise on December 29th, 2009 5:14 pm

Firefly! Freaks and Geeks is good, but Firefly is one of my favorites.

  6. Kayley on December 29th, 2009 5:15 pm

I would have to say both… i’ve been watching to watch Firefly for quite some time now. And plus you can have a huge party and watch Serenity when you finish Firefly.

Freaks and Geeks is brilliant always… I can watch that over and over and over again. I highly recommend it.

Since each series is only one season long, i think the real question is which one to watch first.

May I just throw in there.. a little Veronica Mars action in the mix?

  7. Kayley on December 29th, 2009 5:16 pm

    1. “watching” was supposed to say “wanting”
    2. i realized i didn’t even tell you if i’d watch with you. Of course I would!

  8. Lindsay on December 29th, 2009 5:19 pm

I watched both of these over the summer– both are DEFINITELY worth your time!! I’d be up for watching either one along w/you, but my vote would be to start w/firefly!

  9. Give Me My Remote on December 29th, 2009 5:22 pm

Kayley – No need to watch Veronica Mars since I’ve seen the series from beginning to end at least 3 times.

I’ll be honest, I leaning towards FIREFLY since I already own it, but I’ll let YOU all decide.

  10. Patty on December 29th, 2009 5:28 pm

Freaks and Geeks is on the radar for me this year. Just don’t know when. I will enjoy your comments whichever you decide!

  11. Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect on December 29th, 2009 5:34 pm

First, I vote for Freaks & Geeks. I got it for my birthday last year and watched the whole thing in about a week. LOVED. IT.

Second, I just started watching Buffy last night. Sadly, the first season expires from Hulu in 2 days – so I’ve got a lot of, ahem, WORK, to do tonight and tomorrow night!

  12. P D Yerf on December 29th, 2009 5:45 pm

Firefly all the way!! The only downside is how broken your heart will be when you realize you’ve reached the end and there is no more… 🙁

  13. Sarah on December 29th, 2009 5:48 pm

My vote is for Firefly! It’s a must for any Joss Whedon fan. Amazing show, and it’ll make you love Adam Baldwin even more.

But whichever you choose, I’ll definitely be watching along with you!

  14. Cortney on December 29th, 2009 5:56 pm

Definitely Firefly! The show is pure genius and just plain fun entertainment.

  15. Kim on December 29th, 2009 6:03 pm

I vote Firefly! Although I definitely plan to watch Freaks and Geeks someday.

  16. strunkette on December 29th, 2009 6:05 pm

FIREFLY!! Love the series. I was able to catch up on Hulu, I think a year or so ago, I would totally watch along if I could!

  17. Randi on December 29th, 2009 6:10 pm

I’m going to vote Freaks & Geeks just because it’s a sentimental favorite of mine. You have to meet all of the characters on that show and it might be nice to switch gears a bit before jumping back on the SciFi train. However, Firefly is also awesome and if you watch that, perhaps I can get Paul to watch it with me so we can watch along.

  18. Jaime on December 29th, 2009 6:33 pm

Freaks & Geeks is awesome! Although, I can’t make a valid vote, because I haven’t seen Firefly either….

  19. Diana on December 29th, 2009 6:44 pm

I’ll play along either way, I love them both. But I’m like you and already own Firefly so I guess it officially gets my vote. Can’t wait for all the discussion!

  20. Cori on December 29th, 2009 6:46 pm

I’m being completely biased because I’ve never seen Freaks and Geeks, but I looove Firefly!! I could repeatedly watch any of the too few episodes there are and it would never get old. The cast is awesome and then when you’re done watching all the episodes you get a frickin awesome movie to watch. Gooooo Firefly!! 🙂
P.S. episode commentaries are great too, especially with Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk

  21. theonlydelmy on December 29th, 2009 7:48 pm

Watch both of them! They are both amazing tv shows with short runs (sad about that still, I know it’s been a while). But if you only pick one…pick….oh gosh I can’t even pick — they are both too great to not watch 🙂

  22. Scooter McGavin on December 29th, 2009 7:53 pm

Freaks and Geeks is the better series it was constantly great throughout the series, Firefly had a rocky beginning before it found its footing (and then was canceled right after that happened). And then after F&G, you should move over to Apatow’s other canceled too soon show Undeclared.

  23. eelizbic on December 29th, 2009 9:06 pm

I love both series, but I have to vote for Firefly and say I definitely will watch along with you. Seen them at least 3 times now, but I’d never miss an excuse to relive it again!

Do get to Freaks and Geeks at some point though, if only to see Jon Francis Daley (Sweets on Bones) as a scrawny (and unbelievably adorable) little kid.

  24. Laila on December 29th, 2009 10:27 pm

This is a choice? Firefly, obviously. And of course I’d watch along!

  25. Lisa! on December 29th, 2009 11:02 pm

Firefly first, for sure… then Freaks and Geeks.

C’mon… you totally love Nathan Fillion, and you know it.

  26. Vanessa on December 29th, 2009 11:22 pm

I was recently thinking of watching Firefly again. What better way to watch than watch along with you? I vote Firefly!

  27. LB on December 29th, 2009 11:26 pm

Sorry for yelling, but FREAKS AND GEEKS! It’s brilliant and hilarious. It’s required viewing for any TV addict IMO.

  28. Billiam on December 29th, 2009 11:30 pm

Well, you pretty much chose the two best single-season shows ever made. I feel Freaks and Geeks is one of the best shows of all time, and probably the best high school oriented show/movie/anything. So that would be my vote.
But really, watch one of them now, and watch the other next summer (or whenever you have time). They’re both wonderful.

  29. Billiam on December 29th, 2009 11:32 pm

Oh, and other Freaks and Geeks fans read this comment Alan Sepinwall (who runs the blog “What’s Alan Watching”) did a watch-a-along of Freaks and Geeks a couple summers ago, and has some wonderfully detailed reviews/commentaries that are fun to read if you ever have time to kill (he has also given this treatment to some of “Sports Night” and “The Wire”).

  30. ilovecasey on December 29th, 2009 11:43 pm

Firefly without a doubt! So beautiful and engaging. But you will be very sad when you finish it. But then you can watch Serenity!

  31. Kristin on December 30th, 2009 1:48 am

    FIREFLY!!!!
SO brilliant and funny! Another Joss Whedon classic!

And if that doesn’t do it for ya, all I’m going to say is *ahem* Nathan Fillion naked *ahem*. Oh my!! Quite the Christmas cough, i have!

  32. Tanya on December 30th, 2009 1:49 am

Firefly with a wrap of of Serenity.

  33. Jules on December 30th, 2009 2:25 am

I can’t believe you’ve never seen Freaks and Geeks!! I saw all but the last few, so I’d go for Freaks and Geeks! It’s a must!

  34. Bonnie on December 30th, 2009 6:06 am

I have never seen Firefly and would like to so I’d be right there along with you. Freaks and Geeks is incredibly awesome. I watched the entire series for the first time last year and it was really great.

  35. Kayla on December 30th, 2009 7:58 am

Firefly!!! Definitely! It’s one of my favorite shows EVER, and that’s saying a lot for me. And I’m always up for a re-watch so I’ll totally be watching with you!

(And how can you not watch a show that brings together Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Morena Boccarin, AND Joss Whedon?! Too much awesome to pass up… in SPACE no less!)

  36. spacyz on December 30th, 2009 10:22 am

I like both shows. I own Firefly but have only seen it once so far. I would love to watch it again soon, so my vote is for Firefly.

  37. Nicole on December 30th, 2009 10:59 am

I’ve never seen Firefly (but will at some point because…c’mon. Fillion & Whedon? Duh). However I’m voting for Freaks & Geeks because it’s just so fantastically great. I watched my roommate’s dvds in law school and was so sad when it was over. Then I went out and bought them for myself. I was just looking at it again yesterday b/c I’ve been reorganizing my dvd collection and I was tempted to start it all over again, so I’d be in for a discussion. Also, just fyi, the dvd set is SO worth the money – they have a ton of extra features, commentaries, etc. They really thought of the fans when they put it together. Plus, Undeclared is sort of an unofficial sequal to F & G, and it’s also great, so you could follow up with that at some point.

  38. AMM on December 30th, 2009 11:34 am

Firefly! All hail Captain Tight Pants!

  39. Michele on December 30th, 2009 11:45 am

You really can’t go wrong with either series – I loved them both. I think maybe Firefly first, but if the end of the first episode of F&G doesn’t bring back some MAJOR memories for you, I’d be surprised!!

  40. Amanda on December 30th, 2009 11:46 am

I vote for Firefly, because, as a browncoat myself, I must! 😉 I own it as well and have watched it along with many a friend…so, of course, I would with you as well, Kath!
I have Freaks and Geeks in my Blockbuster online queue and really want to see it as well, though it would be harder to get in time to watch with you…Sweets as a little kid- how adorable is that!!!! Plus, James Franco, Linda Cardellini, and Seth Rogen? Crazy cool cast.
So, to summarize, both (i assume- in Freaks and Geeks case) awesome shows, but my heart lies in the Whedonverse).

  41. Mrsb918 on December 30th, 2009 12:16 pm

    Freaks and Geeks!!

  42. seeleybaby on December 30th, 2009 1:32 pm

Oh wow! Both are so good. I guess if I had to choose one though, it would be Freaks and Geeks, and that is for one reason alone. Bill Haverchuck.

  43. Stacey T. on December 30th, 2009 2:29 pm

I’ve watched both…In my book, Firefly doesn’t come close to the greatness of Freaks & Geeks. Ten years later, I still crave watching marathons of it.

  44. Elise on December 30th, 2009 2:54 pm

Freaks and Geeks! It is simply amazing.

  45. Grant on December 30th, 2009 2:57 pm

    firefly

  46. saramc on December 30th, 2009 3:26 pm

Both shows are great. I own the dvd sets of both. Freaks and Geeks is my preference of the two. I think it’s more accessible and relatable, and the writing is more consistent. Also, Bill Haverchuck is one of the best characters on any television show in history.

  47. Agent52 on December 30th, 2009 7:18 pm

Go for Firefly. This is the quirkiest show I’ve ever seen… space…western…Chinese culture/slang… SHINY!

  48. Kris on December 30th, 2009 7:51 pm

Definitely Firefly! And then Serenity afterward. Pre-Dr. Horrible Nathan Fillion is awesome. Come to think of it, post-Dr. Horrible Nathan Filion is awesome, too. Haha.

  49. OldDarth on December 30th, 2009 8:18 pm

Another vote for both but Firefly followed by Serenity first!

  50. Jane on December 30th, 2009 9:29 pm

    I vote Firefly first!

  51. lifeofmytime on December 31st, 2009 12:15 am

Freaks & Geeks all the way!!! It’s brilliance will amaze you. I’ve seen it beginning to end twice now, and have been looking for an excuse to buy the series (it’s usually pretty cheap on Amazon). I would totally buy it and do the watch along.

  52. Kimber on December 31st, 2009 12:35 pm

FIREFLY! Just because I’ve never seen Freaks & Geeks, and I discovered the joy of Firefly this past year, and loved it. You can usually get great sales, too, and it’s one short season to catch up on, and then the movie if you want to continue the story.

I’m in the midst of my own Project Supernatural! I bought S1 and S2 online, and watched them all within the last week and a half. It was a whirlwind, but so worth the effort (and not much of an “effort” at that!). I’m just waiting for S3 to become cheaper, so I can continue watching up to mid-S4 which is where I started watching onscreen. While I’m scouting cheap S3 prices, I’m going back to Angel S4 – 5, which I’ve never seen! I was out of the country for S4, so never saw it when it originally aired, and just wasn’t able to jump back in for S5.

  53. Shannon on December 31st, 2009 5:39 pm

    Firefly, Firefly, Firefly!!!!
My husband and I rewatch all the episodes regularly, ITS THAT GOOD (the last time was after the Castle Halloween episode). It’s a delicious mixture of dark, poignant, witty, mysterious, exciting and sexy.

  54. Alison on January 1st, 2010 3:20 pm

I actually haven’t scene either, so I’m open to either one and I’ll definitely be watching with you!!

  55. Jen (HIMYM) on January 1st, 2010 4:20 pm

Personally I’ve tried Firefly twice and fell asleep during the pilot both times. Shame on me. I did see Serenity when it was a Coolidge Corner last year so I will try Firefly again because my roommate owns it.

I own Freaks & Geeks which my roommate said she wanted to try. I’m going to vote for Freaks & Geeks only because you watch soooo many shows and movies with these actors and this is where they got their start. If you need to borrow the set, I have an AMAZING set. It’s the yearbook edition so it has a ton of extras and Easter eggs plus the packaging has spectacular detail.

  56. Billiam on January 2nd, 2010 11:10 pm

To Jen: while I liked the pilot, it is a bit slow. And the second episode (which is what the executives forced Whedon to make and air as the pilot) isn’t too special, so you could skip those two at first. I forget what the third ep is, but “Our Mrs. Reynolds” is a great early episode, and your opinion on that ep would be a good indicator of whether you will like the rest of the series.

  57. tessa on January 3rd, 2010 4:01 pm

I vote for Firefly. You can’t beat Captain Tightpants.

  58. Elena on January 4th, 2010 12:33 am

Well I haven’t seen Firefly so I really don’t know … but Freaks and Geeks is great! And it’s only one season so if you watch it first and then Firefly you’ll be so impressed by how much you’ve accomplished! 😀

Put Dexter on the list too!!!

  59. Jen on January 4th, 2010 12:26 pm

I want to shout Freaks and Geeks b/c I love it so much, but if you pick Firefly maybe I can watch along with you since I also own it and watched 2 episodes like 3 years ago.

  60. fred on January 5th, 2010 3:11 pm

Lots of love for FREAKS & GEEKS, one of the best series ever, and yet no one to mention how, while he was exec producer of course, that series was not created by Judd Apatow, so maybe give a little credit to creator Paul Feig.

Having said that, FIREFLY is the best series ever.
