I went into Colbert’s final episode expecting the death of fake Stephen Colbert. In retrospect, immortality makes a lot more sense. Not only does it free the real Colbert to revisit this character in the future, but it also acknowledges that his influence lives on. He promised us a revolution, and he delivered, “because technically, one revolution is 360 degrees right back to where we were.” A rousing song and a heartfelt goodbye were really all we needed in the end.
