On Thursday’s episode of SUPERNATURAL, Jack (Alexander Calvert) has big plans in Apocalypse World…but that could lead to trouble.

“As we’ve seen, Jack wants to kill Michael to save everybody in Apocalypse World,” Calvert previews. “We’re definitely going to see how Jack’s drive and pursuit of that one goal is going to put him at odds with people that he is very close to.”

It’s a difficult transition—and potential risk—for Jack. “Throughout the season, he has definitely been looking to be a part of a family,” Calvert says. “For the time being, he found that role in Apocalypse World. Looking after this group of people, working with Mary and [Bobby]. What he deals with in this episode is he has this new role.”

“Unfinished Business” also brings the return of Osric Chau’s Kevin Tran to the Apocalypse World. Though Calvert says he wouldn’t go so far as to say the two men form any kind of relationship (at least yet), he is thrilled so many familiar faces continue to pop up in the alt-world. “The great thing about Apocalypse World has been bringing people back from other seasons,” he says. “It’s a little family reunion.”

Admittedly, the various reunions are a bit different for Calvert, who joined the show in last season’s finale. When a return comes up, whether he researches their history “depends on the character,” he acknowledges. “The good part is that Jack is absolutely new to everything and every one. Sometimes I want to go in knowing just what’s on the page and what’s in the script, so I’m as true as possible to what he would be experiencing. And that’s fun, too—showing up on set, not knowing what this person is going to bring to the table, not having seen video of them before. That’s exciting when you get to see a lot of times me reacting to these things for the first time.“

“It’s been fun,” he continues. “There’s a lot of veteran actors around me, so you end up having some really interesting conversations on set.”

Additionally, the hour also marked another turn for Richard Speight Jr. as director—and Speight Jr.’s Gabriel had a big part in the episode, too. “Not only is he directing, but he’s in the episode and he has a large fight sequence involving himself,” Calvert marvels. “And not only that, but he’s a great guy.”

“He’s an actor, so he talks to you,” he adds. “Just to have that kind of presence on set…it’s always great to work with people you like and know what’s going on. Watching him move into the director’s chair [again] was a very seamless transition.”

What do you think Jack will be up to in Apocalypse World?
