It’s a very awkward family outing as Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Amy (America Ferrera) meet up with his family—including his brother, Josh (played by Jason Ritter)—for lunch on the Thursday, April 2 episode of SUPERSTORE.

“Two casting things [made me feel] like a hero the past couple weeks,” Ben Feldman says. “Henry [Zebrowski, Feldman’s A TO Z co-star] I got for [‘Carol’s Back’], which I loved, and Jason, I begged for [him to play] my brother. I was so excited that he came on and he was so funny.”

Of course, Jonah has a, well, complicated relationship with his parents: When Marilyn (Meagen Fay) and Richard (Fred Melamed) were first introduced in season 4’s “New Initiative,” they arrived at Cloud 9 under the assumption that Jonah was in medical school. They only discovered he worked at the store—and had been lying to them for years—after he spent most of the episode trying to hide the truth.

Josh was also excluded from the truth—”Jonah lied to everybody,” Feldman admits—and the interplay between the brothers is front and center in “Customer Safari.”

“Pretty much that entire storyline centers—until it doesn’t, which will make sense when you see it—on the dynamic between Jonah and Josh, who has a lot of opinions about Jonah,” Feldman teases.

But don’t expect Jason to be that similar to Jonah. “Jason plays a character you don’t normally [see],” Feldman previews. “Normally Jason’s really lovable and sweet [in the characters he plays]; he’s America’s sweetheart. And it’s so great to see him in this part because it’s very different; it’s a departure, at least from what I’ve seen Jason do.”

Despite the tension between the brothers, Feldman is hoping his friend will return to the series in the future. “Hopefully, we’ll have him back as much as possible because he was great,” he says. “The whole family, the parents, everybody is great and it made for some great scenes.”
