CHICAGO MED’s season came to an early end with the Wednesday, April 15 hour, “A Needle in the Heart,” as Ethan (Brian Tee) put himself on the line to save a young injured child who was being held hostage, and Crockett (Dominic Rains) found himself the prime suspect in an old murder.

With Ethan’s life in jeopardy, he expressed regret about his recent breakup with April (Yaya DaCosta)—who was outside during the ordeal—but he didn’t take an immediate step to reunite with his former fiancee when he was freed. However, “it certainly makes Ethan reconsider how he behaved toward April and if there’s a possibility to make amends,” showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider teased via email.

Meanwhile, with Crockett now the prime suspect of a murder in New Orleans—thanks to DNA evidence—Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) struggled to piece together how the doctor she was getting to know could potentially be a killer. But she managed to save the day: Natalie realized that Crockett’s bone marrow donation could have altered the recipient’s DNA to mirror his, which was enough to get the doc off the hook.

“Our plan is that his legal issues are over, but there will still be emotional fallout from his past,” the executive producers teased.

Though the show already got an early renewal for three more seasons, the writers are waiting to see when the show will go back into production and what season 6 will look like.

“Our hope is to incorporate as many [storylines from this shortened season] as possible into next season,” Frolov and Schneider said. “The big question is how they fit into the new reality of life in the E.R. when we come out on the other side of the current situation.”

But there are a few things the producers are exited to explore that are a bit more evergreen. “As much as Will and Hannah love each other, their relationship will always be difficult due to her addiction,” they previewed. “We look forward to exploring that as well as Natalie’s deepening relationship with Crockett, Charles’ growing bond with his daughter Anna, and Goodwin’s personal/professional relationship with her son Michael who’s now working at Med.”
