SUPERSTORE celebrates its 100th episode on Thursday, November 5, with a ginormous moment for the series: America Ferrera (who plays Amy) makes her final appearance as a series regular.

The comedy reaching the milestone at all is a rarity in this television landscape, with shows having shorter seasons and often struggling to survive. And even SUPERSTORE, which has been the longest-running (non-revival) comedy on NBC for years, had a bumpy start, with the network initially debuting a random season 1 episode online after the show’s television debut.

“It’s incredible,” SUPERSTORE star Ben Feldman (who plays Jonah) admits. “[The importance of this is] not lost on any of us, everybody’s very excited. And we were excited when we were shooting it, too. It was a really special moment.”

But as with many things, COVID-19 shaped what the episode ultimately became. Originally, pre-pandemic, the installment was set to kick off season 6; with production shut down early, it became the second episode of the new season. And with Ferrera signing on to return for two episodes, the half-hour went from being the show’s first without her to her farewell, as Amy and Jonah prepare for their upcoming move for California.

“Unfortunately, we were shooting it and celebrating it in the current state that we are all in right now,” Feldman notes. “In any other situation, if the main character’s leaving and you’re reaching 100 episodes, there’d be a giant party. And there was none of that; there was no fanfare, there’s no celebratory anything. But the producers sent us some hats and that was cool.”

“It’s funny, when you ask anybody how they feel about anything during COVID, they’re never at a ten in any direction—I feel like we’re all just kind of at a five,” Feldman says. “No matter what the news is, no matter what’s going on. So, we celebrated as hard as we could at a five when that happened.”

But Feldman, who has had significant roles on more than half a dozen television shows over the past decade and a half, is relishing experiencing his first go-round with the milestone. “It just doesn’t happen anymore,” he says. “I certainly never expected it, going into this show. And I continue to be just blown away by the fact that we’re still chugging along.”
