With Anna Faris not returning to MOM, the season premiere revealed that her character, Christy, had gotten a full scholarship to Georgetown’s law school and moved across the country.

“Christy is moving on to big things, so our characters are happy for her, and we think our audience will be, too,” MOM co-creator Gemma Baker previously shared via email. “However, Bonnie will struggle throughout the season with missing Christy and where to put her focus now that she’s moved away.”

Though the premiere had Bonnie (Allison Janney) preoccupied with trying to distract Tammy (Kristen Johnston)—who was anticipating a call from her estranged father—the comedy will focus on how empty nesters Bonnie and Adam (William Fichtner) are coping with the absence of her daughter.

“Bonnie and Adam now living without Christy puts their relationship front and center with no buffers,” Baker teased. “So even though it’s their second year of marriage, in a lot of ways this is their honeymoon period.”

As for the AA group, “in the past few seasons, this show has become more about the ensemble,” Baker noted. “But this season we get to dive deeper into all of the characters, learn more about them and how they relate to each other. It’s been really fun to write. Even on Zoom.”

On tap? “Bonnie will run into an old flame and she will also receive a visit from someone fans will be really excited to see,” Baker previewed. “Kevin Dunn will guest star as Marjorie’s new beau, who she adores, but others have mixed feelings about. And Will Sasso will return as Jill’s boyfriend.”
