MOM Anna Faris exit

“Big Sad Eyes and an Antique Hot Dog” — The ladies’ friendships are tested when they live in close quarters during a sober retreat, on MOM, Thursday, April 16 (9:01-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. With MOM set to return to production later this month, it’ll be without one key piece: Anna Faris.

Faris, who has starred on the CBS sitcom for seven years, has exited the comedy, Give Me My Remote has confirmed. Her final episode already aired in the COVID-19-shortened season 7, though her character absence will be explained in the upcoming season 8 premiere.

“The past seven years on MOM have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

“From the inception of MOM, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy,” Warner Bros., CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions added. “We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”

The exit of Christy will pose an interesting challenge for the show. Though it has long been an ensemble (shifting from following Christy as she juggled her own motherhood and messy work life with her reluctant reunion with her own mother, Bonnie, played by Allison Janney to Bonnie and Christy navigating their relationship and the group dynamics with their secondary AA family), the story engine has often run through Christy, whose sobriety birthdays often were celebrated in the season finales. And with Bonnie and Christy finally being in a good place—and arguably still being quasi-codependent—how will Bonnie manage day-to-day life without her daughter living with her?

But for Christy, hopefully, this will be a good thing. After so many setbacks, she’s taken so many steps forward to better herself and now she’s (in theory) getting the chance to live her life for herself.

MOM also stars Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, and William Fichtner.
