The NEW AMSTERDAM season 4 premiere ended with a bombshell: In order for Max (Ryan Eggold) to continue his blossoming relationship with Helen (Freema Agyeman), he decided to quit the hospital to follow her overseas for her dream job. And while the new couple was happy in their bubble, they’ll now have to tell their colleagues—and friends—the news.

“It’s funny, professionally…Bloom, Reynolds, Sharpe, all of us, we have begun to regard him as the only man for the job,” Tyler Labine (who plays Iggy) acknowledges in the video below. “But you have to remember that just a few short years before, there was a revolving door of medical directors. So even though we’re getting this, personally, very, very impactful massive blow…we have to go back to being clinicians…This is a hospital. This is a public hospital. And if he needs to leave, we’re going to have to deal with the new medical director and we’re going to have to wish him well.”

Of course, it doesn’t exactly play out as planned.

“It’s a huge, it’s a big, personal blow to all of them,” Labine says. “So I think you’re gonna see later, this relationship between Iggy and his colleagues, that’s gonna start getting abused a little bit, too. Because, yeah, they might not be patients, and I might not be seeing patients, but I’m definitely therapizing some of my colleagues…And we’re all struggling, everyone’s struggling with a lot of stuff, and least of which is the news that Max is potentially leaving or is leaving.”
