In the aftermath of the FBI franchise crossover, the FBI: MOST WANTED team has a bit of a new look: Kenny Crosby (Kellan Lutz) left the Fugitive Task Force after being shot on the job, while Agent Kristin Gaines (Alexa Davalos) joined.

But as the team—right now consisting of Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix (Julian McMahon), Agent Sheryll Barnes (Roxy Sternberg), and Agent Ivan Ortiz (Miguel Gomez); Agent Hana Gibson (Keisha Castle-Hughes) is returning later in the season—adjusts to their new dynamic they have a high-profile fugitive to capture: a person who participated in the Capitol riot.

What comes next? Showrunner David Hudgins offered a few teases via email about what’s to come…

How is the team, especially Jess, handling Crosby being gone? How much are we getting verbal updates about him/his recovery in the first few episodes?
The team misses Crosby, and, yes, they will be getting updates on his recovery as the season progresses. They will adjust and adapt as Kristin becomes a more integral part of the task force.

Kellan has been a big part of MOST WANTED from the beginning and I respect his decision to put his family first. There is certainly the possibility that he could return for some episodes in the future if that is something he feels ready to do

In the premiere, we got a little bit of resolution to the season finale cliffhanger. How much will that be playing into the season? How is Sarah and Jess’ relationship faring in the aftermath of the attack/shooting?
The fallout from the shooting of Hugh plays in the first few episodes of the season, as Jess, Sarah and Tali all process the emotional fallout from what happened. It puts a strain on Jess and Sarah’s relationship, mostly because they are both concerned with how it is affecting Tali. We think there is an interesting parenting story to tell here.

Kristin and Jess’ tension and history has been delicious from basically moment one. What can you tease about their past and how they’ll be adjusting as she joins the team?
We love the character of Kristin. Alexa Davalos brings so much complexity to the role and it’ll be fun to see her challenge Jess and bring him out of his comfort zone at work sometimes. On a personal level, because they both have daughters about the same age, they’ll bond over that too.

Barnes and her wife set out to expand their family last season. How will that play into the stories we see for them this year?
As we revealed in the season 2 finale last year, Charlotte is pregnant. Their family will definitely be expanding and the new baby is teeing up stories for us unique to mothers who both work full-time. I can also tell you we’ll be meeting Barnes’ mother who is going to be a lot of fun.

With Ortiz no longer the newest kid on the block, how is he adjusting to the team and the changing lineup?
Miguel has really found his groove as Ortiz. With Kristin joining the team, he’s no longer the newbie, and we’ll see him flex some muscles this year as his skill-set comes more into focus. We have a great story for him and Hana—their friendship outside work deepens—and we have another storyline in the works where we’ll learn more about Ortiz’ background and meet his family.

What can you share about when Hana might be re-joining the team and what she might be up to?
Hana will be back in Episode 5. And I don’t want to go in too much detail, but there is a potential love interest coming down the road for Hana…

The second episode is dealing with a fugitive from the Jan. 6 attack. What can you preview about that hour?
It’s a very intense episode with lots of action. One of the major things the FBI has dealing with in real life is finding the people suspected of crimes that day, so we felt like it was a natural stepping-off point for a MOST WANTED story. It’s not about the politics of it, it’s more about the manhunt and what happens when people on the run just keep making things worse for themselves.

Looking ahead, any fugitives/guest stars you’re particularly excited about?
We’ve got some really formidable, and frankly, scary, people on the run this year. From family annihilators to former prisoners with a grudge, and even a brilliant scientist who is suspected of being a spy for the Chinese government and to be working on a very nefarious genetic engineering scheme.

I’m also really excited about a Christmas episode we’ll be doing that comes at the audience in a very unexpected way.

Terry O’Quinn will be back as Jess’s father, we’ll be meeting Barnes’ mother, [and] I think the audience will get really invested in the story with Kristin’s ex-husband and family.
