The CHICAGO MED characters think they’re going to have a nice holiday season. But with so many secrets bubbling under the surface, there’s only so long things can be kept under control. And what better time for things to blow up than a fall finale?

So what exactly is in store for the final episode of 2021? CHICAGO MED showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov offered a few teases…

How is Christmas playing into the hour?
Andrew Schneider: Well, it is a Christmas episode. No doubt about it.
Diane Frolov: And there’s a lot of surprises at Christmas. [Laughs.]
Schneider: The hospital every year throws a Christmas party for the pediatric patients who are in the hospital. And we’ll see that party.
Frolov: And when Jessa asked Will to see her niece in a tree-lighting ceremony, we’re gonna see that.
Schneider: We book-end the episode with a lot of Christmas.
Frolov: Our set dec people had a wonderful time decorating the hospital.
Schneider: There will be some big surprises at the Christmas party, we can tell you that.

The doctors have a lot of drama going on—are the surprises work-based or personal?
Frolov: Oh, we have interpersonal drama at the Christmas party and we have external, as well. We’re doing both.

Will (Nick Gehlfuss) has been working hard to get to the bottom of Dr. Cooper’s (Michael Rady) corruption. How is that playing into this episode?
Frolov: Will never gives up, you know? We will be continuing that storyline with Will.
Schneider: It takes a big surprising turn in this winter finale. It really comes to a head: the investigation, his relationship with Dr. Cooper—
Frolov: With Jessa.
Schneider: And with Goodwin. It all takes a big surprising turn. And the results of that turn will play out in the back half of the season.

Vanessa (Asjha Cooper) and Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) now have a new secret, as they worked to try and help Vanessa beat the random drug testing. What ramifications might be coming?
Frolov: That is just what that episode 9 is going to be about with those two. And it’s going to reach a climax there, too. And [there’s a] surprise there, too, that will have repercussions when we come back.

On a lighter note, it seems like Crockett (Dominic Rains) has found himself in a love triangle with Blake (Sarah Rafferty) and her daughter. What’s next?
Schneider: There is a bit of a triangle, which puts Crockett in a very awkward position. And there is a surprising turn to that relationship in episode 9, the winter finale. It will become even more awkward and complex in the back half.

Are you looking to keep Sarah around long-term? Or is that still TBD?
Frolov: We haven’t figured it out.
Schneider: But she’s been great on the show.

Outside of the personal, what can you tease about the medical cases in the fall finale?
Schneider: Charles has a very interesting psych case about schizophrenia, which impacts his relationship with Dr. Archer in a positive way.

Will this be shedding light on Dr. Archer’s (Steven Weber) past?
Schneider: Yes, a lot about who he is, why he is what he is, and dealing with the past influencing his present.

The other medical case is about a woman whose surprising diagnosis leads to the revelation of a secret she’s been keeping. And that impacts both Stevie and Vanessa.
Frolov: We also are going to have a baby patient, and that baby will return after the break, as well.
