GHOSTS Rebecca Wisocky interview

“The Vault” -Just as Sam and Jay are set to host a friend’s wedding that could get their B&B business off the ground, the ghost of Hetty’s husband, Elias Woodstone (Matt Walsh), tries to ruin it, on the CBS Original series GHOSTS, Thursday, Jan. 20 (9:01-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*.

As the repair and renovation work continues on Woodstone Mansion, Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) are alerted to a vault on the premises on the Thursday, January 20 episode, “The Vault”…something the ghosts were not aware of.

“Hetty is horrified and amazed to realize that there is a room in the house that she’s not aware of,” Rebecca Wisocky acknowledges of her character’s predicament. “It has a door that no one can pass through—and her dead, philandering husband, Elias, has been trapped inside for the last 130 years. It’s a shocker, to say the very least.”

And while the ghosts have found a (mostly) easy peace with Sam and Jay, Elias (Matt Walsh) has no desire to play nice. “He wields as much power and allure and capacity for destruction in death as he did in life,” Wisocky teases.

Hetty has had quite the roller coaster over the past few months, as she also briefly possessed Jay, thanks to a freak accident, in the 2021 episode “Possession.”

“It was wonderful,” Wisocky gushes of Ambudkar’s take on Hetty. “First of all, Utkarsh Ambudkar is a great actor, and he’s a musician—I think that’s one of the reasons that he got Hetty so right. He has, I think, the hardest job on the show. He has to just pretend that none of this craziness is happening, and play the straight guy and still deliver laughs. And he does it so beautifully, so consistently. But for him to be let loose to play her was just a joy to watch. And I felt the character was in very good hands.”

Wisocky also credits the writers for allowing deeper insight into Hetty via the possession. “We learned a lot about Hetty, and her sense of loss and melancholy and yearning—more than we would have learned through just talking to her,” she notes. “Hetty’s eyes were opened, to her own state and her own emotions, in a way that they wouldn’t have been, had she not had this opportunity to go crazy and eat Cheetos and try to drive through the gate and drive all the way to Paris. Which was so fun! It was just wonderful. And I felt lucky to to be peripherally part of that storyline.”
