CHICAGO FIRE season 10 ended with newlyweds Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) hiding away at a cabin in the woods, finally getting a few moments to themselves. Unfortunately for the duo, they were followed, and the episode ended with an ominous truck pulling up to their hideaway.

“What you didn’t know is that [in the] truck is Severide’s original wife,” CHICAGO FIRE co-showrunner Derek Haas jokes to Give Me My Remote.

In all seriousness, unbeknownst to the couple, they’re in “a lot of danger,” co-showrunner Andrea Newman previews of the season 11 premiere, “Hold on Tight,” airing Wednesday, September 21 at 9/8c. “We’re really excited about where that picks up, because the episode really starts with a bang. There’s a lot of action to it, and both Severide and Kidd get to be really physical.”

Of course, the premiere-opening encounter is just the start of the trouble, because even more questions arise. “It leads to a complicated, twisty, turny, suspense story that comes out of that and how exactly that came to be—how these guys tracked them down,” Newman teases.

The situation also forces Severide to take a step back and assess his behavior. “We have Severide coming to terms with the fact that he has made decisions all of his career and in the fire cop world only thinking about the [impact] to himself,” she says. “[He’s done this] without thinking how it would impact someone else. And now, he’s married; he’s got Kidd. He has to think of how she’s going to be involved in whatever he gets involved with. It’ll cause a kind of reckoning for him, as well.”

As Severide is dealing with that, Kidd has her own work issues, in the form of Firehouse 51’s newest recruit—Carver (Jake Lockett)—who happens to be a blast from her past.

“We love this actor, Jake Lockett, and we love this character, because he’s a really different flavor than we’ve brought into the firehouse before,” Newman says. “We’ve had a tendency in the past to bring certain people in that automatically—if they’re going to stay—fit in like the family that 51 is. Carver’s a little different.”

“He’s coming in, he’s got a little backstory with Kidd that’s gonna be fun to play out,” she continues. “They went to the academy together and had some tension back in the day, and he’s a mystery. He plays things a lot closer to the vest than our other guys do. And so they’re going to be trying to peel back layers on him as the audience is, too, and he’s going to stir it up a little bit at 51.”

“What you won’t question is that he’s one of the best firefighters, raw talent, that the house has seen,” Haas adds. “So he’s going to fit right in that way.”

One thing that might help (or, uh, hurt) the way Carver bonds with his new colleagues? The show will officially be celebrating Halloween this season—and they’re going all out. “When we have had a Halloween episode [in the past], it wasn’t like every single character got dressed up in a costume,” Haas teases. “I’m just saying, some CHICAGO FIRE fans might enjoy this year’s Halloween episode.”

And fans will have a certain chief to thank for that. “Boden‘s affection for Halloween will be the driver behind all that, for better for worse,” Newman previews. Adds Haas: “He loves Halloween—but he’s also super intense about Halloween.”
