THE ROOKIE and THE ROOKIE: FEDS Crossover

THE ROOKIE: FEDS – “The Silent Prisoner” – A mysterious caller threatens to reveal a leaked list of undercover FBI agents if a prisoner is not released. After an exposed agent is mortally wounded, the team identifies the caller and heads to the Port of Los Angeles to secure the release of the prisoner. Later, Simone enlists John Nolan to help her remodel Cutty’s garage into a living space; and Brendon, ready to confess his feelings to Antoinette, discovers she has feelings for someone else on an all-new episode of “The Rookie: Feds,” TUESDAY, JAN. 3 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on ABC. With THE ROOKIE now an official universe between the mothership and THE ROOKIE: FEDS, the two shows will now air back-to-back on Tuesday nights, kicking off with a crossover on January 3 at 8/7c.

“It’s super dynamic; we come back with a bang,” Alexi Hawley, who created THE ROOKIE and co-created THE ROOKIE: FEDS, tells Give Me My Remote. “Obviously the cliffhanger [for THE ROOKIE] is Tim and Lucy[‘s decision to give their relationship a shot], so we’ve got to come back on that. We promised them a date, so we’ve got to give them that.”

But crime won’t stop for a night, even when it might derail a long-awaited first date. And, more importantly, one of the team’s own is in danger when Nyla (Mekia Cox) and James (Arjay Smith) stumble into an active crime. “There’s a bank robbery [on THE ROOKIE] that spirals into something much bigger that crosses over into FEDS,” Hawley previews. “Simone shows up with Carter in ROOKIE just to start their part of the journey, and then it hands off in the nine o’clock hour to FEDS. And that story goes in a very different direction, but in a really cool way.”

Keeping the shows in each other’s orbits was always part of the larger franchise plan for Hawley. “As I was thinking about what the spinoff could be, it seemed very important to keep it LA-based so that we could do crossovers,” he shared last year. “I think that’s ultimately the success of shows [within a franchise], like the CHICAGO series over on NBC—those are successful because [of that]. Even GREY’S and STATION 19, it’s in the ability to bring characters in and out.”
