THE ROOKIE: FEDS – “Face Off” – Simone utilizes her informant to track down an arms dealer on the FBI’s Most Wanted list; and Brendon, against Laura’s advice, investigates a risky lead on a congressman. When Carter and Brendon each find themselves at a crossroads, they begin to question their futures on the team and their loyalty is tested. Cutty and Simone struggle to see eye-to-eye on how they are helping the community, while Tim and Laura find common ground with their similar no-nonsense approach to training rookies on “The Rookie: Feds,” TUESDAY, OCT. 4 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC. With THE ROOKIE universe officially underway—the mothership is airing Sundays at 10/9c and spinoff THE ROOKIE: FEDS airing Tuesdays at 10/9c—the shows will continue to collide beyond the initial backdoor pilot arc on THE ROOKIE and FEDS’ official series premiere.

“As I was thinking about what the spinoff could be, it seemed very important to keep it LA-based so that we could do crossovers,” THE ROOKIE creator/THE ROOKIE: FEDS co-creator Alexi Hawley notes to Give Me My Remote. “I think that’s ultimately the success of shows [within a franchise], like the CHICAGO series over on NBC—those are successful because [of that]. Even GREY’S and STATION 19, it’s in the ability to bring characters in and out.”

“The crossover factor is going to be a lot of fun, and we will definitely do it a bunch,” he continues. “Even in small things, where we just have a case that bounces off the FBI or the FBI needs the LAPD. We’ll do everything from one scene crossovers to full-on episode crossovers.”

While Hawley is balancing both shows, he also has a key partner in keeping things cohesive: THE ROOKIE: FEDS co-creator/co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter. Prior to the ABC series, the duo worked together for over a dozen years, spending time on CASTLE (where they eventually went on to become co-showrunners), TRAINING DAY, and THE ROOKIE.

“We’re totally collaborating; he and I created FEDS, and we’re running that show together,” Hawley notes. “And Terence is so good. I’ve known him a long time, and the relationship is just really easy, which is great.”

And the duo is using elements from their time together in the new show, with Hawley noting THE ROOKIE: FEDS will utilize THE ROOKIE’s unconventional way of telling stories when it fits: “ROOKIE: FEDS is gonna end up with their own true crime story at some point.”
