NEXT LEVEL CHEF

NEXT LEVEL CHEF: (L-R) Mentor Nyesha Arrington, Mentor/Executive Producer Gordon Ramsay and Mentor Richard Blais in the “Next Level Audition – Social Media” season premiere episode of Next Level Chef airing Sunday, January 28 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT live to all timezones) on FOX. Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

NEXT LEVEL CHEF: Okay, this is a fascinating way to have the chefs earn their spot in the show: Three very different quick meals. And, arguably, possibly even harder than anything they’ll have to do during the show itself?

Also, an interesting choice to start the audition round with the social media chefs, whose specific skill prioritizes appearance (in theory) versus flavor and speed. (Something can look gorgeous in a video while being undercooked/the wrong taste, etc.)

In some ways, the basement seemed to be the easiest of the rooms…at least the canned food was cooked. (Though they were horrified by the equipment they could use to cook things.)

Making a viral dish in 20 minutes in the middle level felt like it could have been the hardest, because they had to cook the protein, create/plate the dish in a way where it could feel plausibly viral, and get it all done in 20 minutes.

But, man, people were ambitious. We saw people trying to make pasta, tortillas, hollandaise sauce…20 minutes! I get go big or go home, but you also kind of need to get into the show itself. Some people definitely bit off more than they could chew.

That being said, it was a fun premiere, and it’s a fun way to do auditions. It’ll be interesting to see how the other groups of chefs handle the three-step final audition process.
