About Last Night…THE VOICE, ALL RISE, and SONGLAND
May 5, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!
THE VOICE: I’m really impressed with the video quality of the show, and it did feel like the singers were performing relatively unpolished. It was a nice touch to see the coaches reacting to the performances as they happened.
However, yikes to the filters. The singers are talented enough and didn’t need the weird—distracting—extra elements. I really hope next week’s performance show is more stripped down.
ALL RISE: I can’t believe Mark and Lola’s first time facing off wasn’t even in-person! In some ways, it’s absolutely perfect/fitting (and probably led to a little less shenanigans than in-person), but it’s also crazy it happened this way.
It was an incredibly ambitious, but believable episode. Not many shows could fundamentally pull off a believable quarantine episode—so many are set in essential fields, so the characters wouldn’t be home—but the show was fun and felt naturally in the world.
SONGLAND: There were other good songs, but it was very clear “Girls Like Me” was the right song for Martina McBride. But I really do hope the songwriters get to work with her in the future, like she indicated she wanted.
