CHICAGO P.D.’s Patrick John Flueger Previews Eriq La Salle’s Directing ‘Swan Song’

On the Wednesday, March 10 episode of CHICAGO P.D., a cop is filming shooting a Black man…and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) are tasked with arresting him and bringing him into the station.

But as the case quickly becomes high-profile, things get dangerous for the trio–fast.

“I feel like the writers, crew, and actors have been really pushing the envelope; I just feel like we’re firing on all cylinders,” Flueger gushes.

Off-screen, the episode marks an important milestone, as it’s the final hour directed by longtime directing EP Eriq La Salle. “[‘Protect and Serve’] is Eriq La Salle’s—our beloved directing producer for years—swan song,” Flueger says. “We did some really cool things. He basically asked every department to really flex their creative muscles. We have some cool crane shots in there. Really neat lighting…it was really fun to make. When we were making it, it was really fun, really exciting to make.”

“It was really cool to see him, on his way out the door, gift every department the ability to really, really flex their muscles,” he continues. “And I’m just excited to see what comes, because they keep keep surprising me every time a new script comes down the pike.”
