As police procedurals adjust how they tell stories in the wake of widespread call for police reform, CHICAGO P.D. is adding a new character to help with the transition.

Nicole Ari Parker has joined the series in a recurring role as Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller, a rep for the show confirmed. According to Deadline, who was first to report the casting, Miller, an Atlanta native, “is a progressive, ardent proponent of police reform. She wants to help Voight and Intelligence adapt to the new reality, but will not tolerate breaches of the new police guidelines and protocols.”

CHICAGO P.D. ended its season with Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) choosing to turn on a well-connected fellow cop who had racially profiled a young black man, with fatal consequences. The final scene of the shortened season had the cop’s allies quietly threatening Atwater for his decision.

“Atwater made a courageous and difficult choice, which means there will be consequences,” CHICAGO P.D. boss Rick Eid said at the time. “Courage has its cost and Atwater will have to pay up.”

CHICAGO P.D., Season Premiere, Wednesday, November 11, 10/9c, NBC
