As THE IRRATIONAL wraps up its first season on Monday, February 19, the NBC drama has had an unconventional freshman year.

The Jesse L. Martin-led series was one of the few to air original episodes in Fall 2023, having banked seven episodes before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes shut down production for months. Then, a little over a week after the SAG-AFTRA strike concluded, it was announced that NBC had actually added an additional installment to season 1, bringing the episode count to 11. (The good news? The show also got an early season 2 renewal.)

But adding an extra episode to a show with a planned mythology/arc came with its own complications.

As THE IRRATIONAL’s Alec (Jesse L. Martin) works to solve cases using his behavioral expertise, there’s a bonus to it all: Being in close quarters with his ex-wife, Marisa (Maahra Hill).

“We’ve seen a lot of will they/won’t they where they have a meet-cute in the pilot…the kind of CASTLE format,” THE IRRATIONAL creator Arika Lisanne Mittman tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I wanted to spin it a little bit on a couple who already did; been there, done that, and they’re divorced and they’re both trying to move on—but they can’t quite stay away from each other.”

THE IRRATIONAL debuted on NBC on Monday, September 25 at a strange time for the industry: hours after the WGA and studios came to a deal to end their strike, while the actors remained (and remain) on strike.

“It was definitely an odd time to premiere—we premiered the day after the writers strike ended, so we at least felt like we had two reasons to celebrate that day,” THE IRRATIONAL showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “So that was exciting. We got to shoot seven of our episodes before the strike shut [us] down, and then we’re going to be coming back to finish the rest of the season. So, yeah, it’s definitely not something that happens every season—to be split up by five months in between [filming episodes]. But there [was] a lot of time to think about the show and how excited I was for it to finally premiere and for people to finally get to watch it.”
