TRUE BLOOD Recap: Never Let Me Go

July 20, 2009 by

This episode was a lot of relationship stuff, not much to further the big plot lines but at least get them to a new section for the next few weeks.

Sookie, Bill and Jessica

Sookie can’t get Barry, the telepathic bellboy to talk to her. He warns her that the Dallas vampires are dangerous and out of control and aren’t really nice to humans as a whole. Jessica is punished for ordering “room service” and starts to talk to Hoyt over the phone. Bill continues to feel the pressure of trying to protect everyone while not having the control over any of the decisions. Sookie tells him that that’s what being a human is like and tells him that she will stay safe.

When they meet with the Dallas vampires, it quickly becomes clear that the Bon Temps crew was invited as a courtesy and that all of the Dallas vampires have war in mind with the Fellowship of the Sun, who they are positive took Godrick. In order to stop all of the arguing and save all of the area humans, Sookie volunteers to infiltrate the Fellowship of the Sun and find out a) who took Godrick and b) who is working both sides. Eric is so interested in Godrick because Godrick is (was?) his maker.

At the end of the episode, we learn that Barry quit the hotel. Then, a random female vampire shows up, fangs out.

This is obviously the main storyline of the season, as it should be. We returned from the “Marianne is Crazy Hour” of the past couple weeks and got back to learning a lot more about vampire relations. This season has delved a little deeper into the way that coming out of the coffin has affected all sorts of things and how all of the traditions of vampires work in the mainstream world. Plot elements like this are what I’ve been craving all season, so I loved it.

Jason and the Church

Jason is an idiot. He enters boot camp and is, as usual, a shining star. He even helps Luke at one point. In the midst of marital issues involving “going too far” to some extent involving the church, Sarah and Jason “hook up” (hey, it’s a PG blog, people). Also, the Church is developing more and more weapons to kill vampires and Jason is being groomed to be part of the army.

Jason’s a moron. This is pretty common knowledge. It’s also pretty understood that the Newlins are using Jason. My hypothesis is that the Newlins are on the cusp of finding out about Sookie, which will make her mission all the more interesting.

Everyone else.

Marianne finally did something new for a change by first moving into Sookie’s (uninvited), then putting a curse on Merlotte’s, making Tara the scapegoat for everything, then becoming a motherly (more like grandmotherly) figure to mimic Sookie’s grandmother, whom Tara dearly misses.

Daphne is also a shapeshifter. She and Sam immediately form a bond that transcends anything that Marianne could produce.

Lafayette returns to Merlotte’s. Sam asks for answers as to where he was, and Lafayette cannot talk about it. He is definitely a changed person, which should be interesting in the light of next week’s preview.

This might be the first episode since the pilot that I was completely happy with, from beginning to end. I think all of the storylines went as far as they had to, we learned enough information to keep us begging for more and it was a completely entertaining hour of television that made up for all Marianne-related transgressions that have occurred so far.

Are you interested in the direction the show is taking? Your thoughts on what the Newlins are really up to? What’s with Maryanne and he obsession with Tara? Is Daphne really interested in Sam or is it something else? Will Sookie be safe inside the Fellowship?

Philboy is a Midwesterner WHO NOW HAS AN APARTMENT!!! His can’t miss shows are “24”, “HIMYM” and “True Blood”. His thoughts for the week are, “Finally, ‘True Blood’ is back to normal…well, normal as it can be!” and “When will Debbie get kicked off of The Next Food Network Star?!”

I think that random female vampire at the end was Bill’s maker, no?

I also really enjoyed this episode. I could do without Marianne most of the time (even fast-forwarding through that storyline in previous episodes.) I definitely think there is more to Daphne. I still don’t get the claw marks down the back. I thought it was because that monster (who I think is Marianne) attacked her and has control over her. The whole I’m a shapeshifter too has thrown off my theory a little. Is she really or does Marianne have a way of making people be what the other wants them to be. Tara’s guy, Daphne….

That’s why I love this show. So much to think about!

I want more of the vampire storyline. It’s the best part by far.

The “random female vampire” at the end was the vamp that made Bill.

Do you all know that was the vamp that made Bill? Are you speculating based on the books?

I didn’t think Marianne was putting a curse on them at Merlotte’s but feeding off their emotions… hmm, now I don’t know.

The vampire at the end was not random. The “what happened in the past” montage before the show dwelled on the flashback to when Bill was made a vampire. She’s his maker, she has a pretty distinctive face, and they gave her a close-up. The writers assume their viewers are intelligent watch the show closely. Which is why I like the show.

Easy, David. Let’s calm down…it was an oversight that more than a few people missed.

I for some reason think that Daphne is that damn pig that marianne randomly has around her. the pig just disappears, I think Marianne is that big minotaur thing that attacked Sookie, and then daphne ends up with the same scratches that sookie was going to die from. meh whatever, my logic is awful, but I have an overactive imagination haha.
