GMMR Spotlight: “My Boys” on TBS

December 5, 2006 by

Cast of My Boys

Last week was the series premiere of TBS’s new comedy, My Boys. I was really bummed out that I didn’t have the time to give you all the proper heads up about it, because I really liked it. So although it might be a week late, I thought I could give you the quick run down on what the show is all about so you can be up to speed as you watch episode #3* tonight at 10/9c on TBS.

The Premise:

PJ Franklin (portrayed by Jordana Spiro) is a twenty-something sports reporter for the Chicago Sun Times. At first glance, she’s a typical young single woman–smart, attractive, outgoing, personable. Her boys are her family, which sometimes hinders PJ’s dating life, as the men she tries to date don’t know how to react to her unconventional interests and the all-important men in her life.

PJ’s group of friends includes her brother, Andy (Jim Gaffigan), whose wife keeps him on an all-too-short leash; Mike (Jamie Kaler), a commitment-challenged ladies man who works for the Chicago Cubs; Kenny (Michael Bunin), a sports-memorabilia store owner who hasn’t mastered the art of dating; and Brendan (Reid Scott), a hard-rock DJ whose on-again, off-again romance with his girlfriend often leaves him crashing at PJ’s apartment; and the most recent addition to the group, Bobby (Kyle Howard) a sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune, the Windy City’s rival newspaper. PJ’s friend Stephanie (Kellee Stewart), who she’s known since journalism school, does her best to give PJ advice on men and dating from a more female point-of-view.

GMMR’s Quick Two Cents:

Give this one a shot. Although I didn’t fall completely head-over-heels with the premiere episode, I found myself surprisingly bummed out when I got to the end of the 5th episode and my screeners were all gone.

My Boys isn’t a laugh out loud comedy ala Scrubs or The Office. But it’s still funny, and I found the humor in the situations to be more akin to a romantic comedy, albeit it one that your guy won’t completely hate because it’s laced with baseball metaphors and a hot chick (but let’s hope the writer’s come to their senses and drop the baseball metaphors, because they get really old…quick)

To be honest, I’m not completely sold on Jordana Spiro’s portrayal of PJ. I’m not sure she has the pep and perk to carry the show. The good thing for her, and us, is that the boys come through and do their part to help her out. After the first few ep, you really get a sense that the actors find their comfort level with their characters, and you see them emerge as an on-screen family rather than individual actors filling their designed roles.

My Boysis TBS’s first attempt at original programming and I think they knocked the ball out of the park with this one (ok, that was me just forcing a baseball metaphor to show you how annoying they are). The show is good and it’s worth taking the time to check it out. And seeing that it doesn’t have stiff competition on my TiVo, My Boys has just picked up a season pass.

Catch up with My Boys:

Thanks GMMR. I had heard of this show but I wasn’t sure if it was worth checking out. Since you and I watch a lot of the same shows, I think I’ll be watching this one tonight.

    Love your site!

I lurve this show, I’ve seen the first four eps and thought it was great. And it actually had laugh out loud moments which is rare for me besides THe Office and Arrested Development (RIP)

Well hello there stranger!! Nice to have you back. Did you get a new job or something?

I saw the 1st two eps last week and I liked the show. I agree with GMMR that it wasn’t LOL hillarious and I didn’t enjoy it as much as The Office; but I found watching a fully grown tomboy with a penchant for baseball interacting with her buddies amusing. I will give it another chance tonight.

Speaking of TBS original programming, did anyone see their new show 10 Items or Less which also premiered last week? I did not like the way they were promoting it, “If you think an office is funny wait until you see life in a supermarket” or something to that affect. There was some interference with my cable that night so I wasn’t able to catch the whole thing, but in the words of Stanley, I do NOT think that is funny.

Yeah I saw the first two ep of “10 Items or Less” and although the second ep was better than the first, they still both did nothing for me. They tried TOO hard to be like “The Office” in my opinion. The bumbling bosses in the inane workplace minus the smart dialogue and laughs.

I was kind of skeptical when I first watched it last week, but I really enjoyed it. It’s a good show! I am going to keep watching, I hope I stick with it!

GMMR – I totally agree, I watched the first two eps last week and mentioned in the boards that I wasn’t really into it, until the first episode was over, and I was like, what, it’s over??

So I guess it is OK – but I only have my toes in the water on this one.

I can totally relate. I worked for the Baltimore Orioles for years with all 20-something, single guys in the room. I grew up a tomboy and at 32 years old, married with two kids, I still am a tomboy at heart. Me thinks I’ll be tuning in again….

Wow! I feel so good knowing GMMR has my taste in shows. What an ego boost. But yea, liked the show and it’s now a season pass on my Tivo. It was great by any means but I like it so far.
