DAMAGES on FX…Don’t Miss It

July 23, 2007 by

Damages, Glen Close

Every once in a while a brilliant new show comes along and its got everyone talking You know that show…the one that you are kicking yourself for because you missed it and you feel its too late to get caught up. Yeah, so that show is DAMAGES and luck for you, you didn’t miss it. DAMAGES premieres tomorrow night at 10/9c on FX.

DAMAGES is dark, smart and edgy thriller with superb writing and impeccable acting. It’s one of those shows that begins with the ending and unfolds as it works its way back from the beginning. It’s a formula that is risky these days as TV watchers are starting to get a bit leery of getting invested in this type of show only to have it disappear without the satisfaction of a proper ending (The Nine, Day Break, etc). But viewers can rest easy this time around because I am confident that FX will let us enjoy the experience of DAMAGES from beginning to end.

The legendary Glenn Close leads up the cast as Patty Hewes, a high-stakes litigator who is equally admired and feared by her colleagues. Ms. Hewes is the type of lawyer that won’t let anything stop her from seeing justice pervail, even if that means she has to break the very laws she holds in high esteem to do it.

Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrnes) is a recent law school grad who is highly sought after by all the major law firms in Manhattan, but whom is intrigued by the opportunity to work for Patty Hewes. But before Ellen can get the opportunity to try to impress Patty, she has to get through Patty’s right hand man, Tom Shayes, played by Tate Donovan. Tom seems a bit protective of Ellen and does his best to prepare her and warn her for her interview with Patty. When Tom informs Ellen that the only time she can interview with Patty is the following Saturday, Ellen is crushed as that is the day of her sister’s wedding. The conflict seems like a no-brainer to Tom – skip the wedding. Ellen refuses, but as luck (or bad luck) would have it, that is just the type of conviction that Patty Hewes is looking for in a new Associate – and that’s just what she tells Ellen when she crashes her sister’s wedding to offer Patty the job.

So with her dream job now secured, Ellen Parsons gets down to business. Within a week she has a new career, a new wardrobe, and even a new finance. Unfortunately for Ellen, it was all just a bit too good to be true.

In the first episode, we follow Ellen as she works alongside Patty on a high-stakes, class action law suit against Arthur Forbisher, a wealthy and corrupt CEO played by Ted Danson. It’s not too soon after joining the case that Ellen gets to see first hand just how far Patty Hewes will go to win. And when Ellen finds that she has a personal connection to the Furbisher case, she starts to question just why Patty Hewes hired her in the first place.

I really have no interest in spoiling the premiere episode for you any more than I already have. You really need to check this show out because you will not be disappointed. Glenn Close is beyond brilliant in this dark role which will leave you in awe of Patty Hewes’ evil brilliance. I’m not sure calling this show “appointment TV” does it service. Actually I don’t know if I can adequately express how much I loved the first two episodes of this show. It was a treat for me, and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.

I can’t wait to check this show out. I like Glenn Close and I really like it when she plays a “darker” character. Do you know how long the season will run through??

ok Tivo set on your recommendation. I tried Mad Men this weekend but I apparently missed what was brilliant about it. plus i was distracted trying to imagine Conner from Angel as an adult.

Nice breakdown! I’ve been seeing ads for this all over FX…and can’t wait to watch it tonight. It definitely seems captivating and Glenn looks great! This could be our office’s new weekly water-cooler show…goodness knows we need one after the departure of the Sopranos!!
