GREEK: Divine Secrets of the ZBZ Sisterhood

May 18, 2009 by

I think I’ve found a silver lining in this gloomy week of season finales – my schedule is now a bit more open to watch other shows which usually are DVR back logged for a few days.  Case in point – GREEK.

Tonight was the very first time I’ve ever watched GREEK live.  Since I was a late comer to the show, I caught the first season and most of the second either on DVD or iTunes. Once the show came back for the second half of this season it’s been up against CHUCK, GOSSIP GIRL, HOUSE, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and THE BIG BANG THEORY – so many shows that even my two DVRs couldn’t handle it.  So I’ve been watching GREEK on the ABC Family press site (thank you!) or ABCFamily.com. Not ideal. But tonight I was able to watch it live and it was fantastic. ZBZ snaps all around.

The events that took place in tonight’s episode were important in and of themselves, but they also serve as the set up for the rest of the season. Especially the, dare I say truce, between long time rivals Cappie and Evan?!  But before we get to the boys let’s talk about the girls.

Having recently declared herself a lesbian, Rebecca sought out the company and advice of CR’s other gay Greeker, Calvin. Calvin advised Rebecca to take it slow, but I don’t think it’s in that girls genes to half ass anything.  Rebecca and Robin had a great first date, but when their end of night kiss didn’t set off the fireworks Rebecca expected she wondered whether she might have been wrong in thinking that simply declaring yourself lesbian actually makes you one.

As it turns out, Rebecca was a bit more Anne Heche than Portia DeRossi.  Robin took it well and the two decided to remain friends.  And now that Beccs is back on the prowl the men of CR better watch out.

Also not getting any points for Team Gay was Calvin.  Working out at the gym, Calvin caught the eye of some really hot guy (sorry actor that played hot guy – I was too distracted by your eyes and your abs to catch your characters’ name). After some small talk, hot guy showed Calvin his aforementioned abs and chest and complimented Calvin on his pecs.  Now if that isn’t the start of a gay porn I don’t know what is. But hold up. Before you break out the popcorn, I must tell you that things didn’t go quite as Calvin had hoped.  After agreeing to meet up later under the pretenses of watching the Lions game (no, that’s not a euphemism, there actually was a Detroit Lions game on), Calvin and hot guy exchanged a few shy smiles and one big misunderstanding. Calvin mistook a move by hot guy and thought he was leaning in for a kiss. He wasn’t. He’s straight.

But here’s the deal.  That guy is totally not straight.  Later when confronted, he did tell Calvin that he knew Cal was flirting with him and he liked the attention.  Maybe he was flirting back, but it was just because he was down about his girlfriend or something. He’s straight.  Yeah, no. I cry foul. I think hot guy is a little more down with the boys than he would like to admit to himself.  Perhaps we’ll see him pop up again soon.  Here’s to hoping.  But if not, that’s ok. I’m still pulling for Calvin and Heath to find their way back to each other.

Don’t think the gays were the only ones with the drama tonight.  Nope, not a chance.

While Ashleigh was out of town (and by the way sorely missed. So glad Ash was in scenes for next week – I miss her when she’s gone), Casey was confronted by some of the IKI girls who regreted leaving ZBZ and wanted to come back. Allowing the girls to defect IKI and return to ZBZ would be the perfect revenge against Frannie.  But the thing is, Casey isn’t sure it’s the right move.  These girls abandoned ZBZ.  They turned their back on their sisters. But again, Frannie…revenge. Tough call.

After confronting a stunned and hurt Frannie, Casey decided it wasn’t in the best interest of the house to let the girls come back to ZBZ. She denied the girls and sent them and their stilettos back to IKI where they belong.

Girls will be girls. And boys will sometimes act like catty little girls.

Seems Cappie hasn’t quite forgiven Rusty for kissing Jordan yet, well, unless “Douche Mover” is now a term of endearment. Struggling to get back in with his big brother, Rusty enlists Dale to help find out information about the location of The Amphora Society, CR’s secret society (think Skulls & Bones) that Cappie has been trying to find since his Freshman year.  But Cappie seems to have no interest and is even more annoyed with Rusty for even asking about it. Little did Cappie know he didn’t need to go with Rusty on his little adventure to find the answers he once sought.

While out for his nightly exercise, Cappie was abducted by some hoodlums (no seriously they were wearing hoods and everything), and brought to a secret location.  The secret location of…yes, you guessed it, The Amphora Society (seriously, please tell me you guessed it…it’s GREEK…I love it but it’s not overly complicated people). One by one the elite members of the Campus Rhodes student body are dehooded and shown their location.  Cappie couldn’t be more excited, well at least until it was revealed that Evan was also chosen.  Cappie denounced TSA and asked to be taken home. A little dramatic, don’t you think, Cap?

Meanwhile baby bro and big sis Cartwright have a chat during which Casey tells Rusty that finding the whereabouts of The Amphora Society was something Evan and Cappie used to do together back when they were best friends and roommates. Ah, a light bulb over Spitter’s head.

Rusty confront Cappie about how he’s been treating his little brother.  Rusty explained that no, he shouldn’t have kissed Jordan, but he was the one that liked her first.  Andy just made a move before he did. Spitter also told Cap straight out that he wasn’t Evan.  Evan might have “douche moved” on Casey, but that’s not what Rusty did. The circumstances were different.

The Amphora Society decides to give Cappie another shot (which honestly I thought was a little weak and a bit too convenient) and this time he accepts.  But before he does he makes peace with Evan and apologizes for making a move on Casey before Evan got a chance to.  He knew Evan liked her but he made the first move and won the girl.  What was missing from their little exchange was Evan apologizing for moving in on his best friend’s girlfriend, but that will come in another emotionally charged episode later down the line.

So our two rivals are now in a better place.  Well at least underground.  The rules of The Amphora Society forbid anyone from talking about it or even acknowledging it. Those inducted must give no indication that the society exists. This means that Cappie and Evan must keep with their charade in front of their respective brothers.

“Secret brothers, yeah, that’s what they are.  Trying so hard to hide the way they feel.”

Oh and in a little twist, guess who’s the BMOC and the leader of the Campus Rhodes TAS? None other than Dean Bowman himself.

Pretty good episode all around.  It was a little heavy on the drama, and a little light on the KT fun. But I have no doubt we’ll see the boys swilling again soon.  I’ve known for a little while about the secret society and Cap/Evan’s truce, but I’ve been good and haven’t said a word.  Wait, maybe I would be eligible for The Amphora Society. Please Sean Smith, can I join?

Intrigued to see how the private truce plays out publicly between Omega Kai and Kappa Tau. Here’s to hoping the antics between the rival frats don’t let up despite their Presidents’ secret brotherood.

Sad to see the romance between Rebecca and Robin play out so quickly. I’m partial to vulnerable Beccs and I liked her insecurities about Robin.

Oh yeah and hot guy…still gay. Someone should tell him.  All the hot guys are. Welcome to my life.

So that was a lot of rambling about GREEK. Your turn.  Thoughts on Evan and Cappie’s new secret bromance? Is Casey too nice or just dumb? Did she let Frannie win once again? Anyone else think that Rusty is prone to overreacting?  Just saying…

Can’t wait to talk GREEK with you!  And stay tuned to GMMR as I’ll soon be sharing tidbits, pics and video from my recent set visit to GREEK. Want a teaser?  Let’s just say that I got some serious couch time with Cappie in the Kappa Tau backyard.  And no, I’m not lying.
