TRUE BLOOD: Release Me

August 3, 2009 by

Ladies and Gentlemen, with a round of applause please welcome the newest member of the TRUE BLOOD family…Godric.  What a fine, fine addition if I do say so myself.

Yes, in the final scene of last night’s episode we got to meet the man responsible for bringing us Erik. A millions times – thank you.

Sorry, I didn’t want to bury the lead. But I suppose it would be worthwhile to back up a little bit and discuss some key moments in this fabulous episode.  The TRUE BLOOD writers have really been on their game the past few weeks. We’re getting some great storytelling that is both intriguing, funny and creepy as all get out.  More please.

And tonight we finally got some serious answers about the origins of Maryann.  If I understood what Daphne was saying then it is seems that Mare is a conduit of Beelzebub. Or maybe Satan herself?! Either way, she’s really no good.  Maryann infuses the devil’s energy and enters the souls of those around her, thus all the black eyed zombies getting their collective swerve on. But it seems that Maryann isn’t all powerful.  Those with supernatural abilities can resist her evil ways.  It’s one of the reasons that she’s just so eager to get Sam Merlotte. When he was younger he found a way to resist her, and she’s never quite gotten over it.

Daphne on the other hand has been a good and devil-worshiping, loyal shape shifter. She brought Sam to Maryann. But then she spilled the truth to Sam about what Maryann actually is.  Is that perhaps why Maryann had a black eyed Eggs stab Daphne to death? I’d say poor Daphne, but clearly that girl had it coming.

Maryann is somewhat trying to keep her evil ways on the DL, but when her attempts to slash Sam to death failed, and with the sudden appearance of Andy Bellefleur at her orgy, it seems Ms. She-Devil is getting a little sloppy. Tara is already a little suspicious of Maryann, and I think that a little conversation about what Sam and Andy saw that night might bring her over to the side of all things good.  Here’s to hoping that Eggs is in the dark too. I hate to think that that fine man is aware of Maryann’s evil side. Really, I just don’t want him off the show.  I love me some Eggs.

But I also love me some Jason Stackhouse.  And so does Sarah.  Seems one night with Jason has opened up a whole new level of love for Mrs. Newlin.  She thinks it best to tell Steve everything.  Jason’s not so sure given the weapons Steve has handy. Little did Jason know that was the least of his worries.

Down in the basement of the Fellowship of the Sun, Sookie and Hugo are still being help captive. Steve comes down to talk to them and in a move of apparent desperation, Hugo spills their real names.  Clearly Steve is taken back by the revelation that he’s talking to Sooke Stackhouse, sister of his dearly anointed Jason Stackhouse. Uh Oh.

It’s not long before Sookie realizes that Hugo is the traitor.  He’s the one that informed the Fellowship of Sookie’s arrival in Dallas.  He also brought her to the church. Seems Hugo has his boxers all in a twist because Isabel refused to turn him. Oh what men will do when their ego’s are bruised.

Believing Jason has infiltrated the Fellowship on behalf of the Vampires, Steve and the bodyguard drag Jason, with a knife to his throat, into the car and drop him in the woods.  Steve, being the Godly man that he is, tells the bodyguard to basically kill Jason.  A confused (as always) Jason has no idea what this is all about.  He first thought it had to do with Sarah, but when he realized it didn’t he just thought Steve had the wrong guy.  But when the bodyguard had some ill words about Sookie, well let’s just say Jason had a bit of an adrenaline rush and he overpowered the bodyguard and got away.

Back at the hotel, Hoyt and Jessica have revealed to each other that they are both virgins . They agreed to be each other’s first.  As Jessica slept Hoyt decorated the room with roses and candles (blood scented candles none the less) while the faint sound of “Bleeding Love” could be heard in the background.  “Bleeding Love” – HA! How I love this show!

Just down the hall, Bill was being kept by Lorena who overpowered every attempt he made at leaving the room and getting to Sookie. Flashbacks showed us that this isn’t the first time Bill tried to get away from his makes.  Back in the 30’s she only let him leave under threat of suicide. This time she’s even more reluctant.

Not knowing why Bill can’t hear her inner cries for help, Sookie enlists the help of Barry, a fellow telepath, to get her message to Bill.  At the hotel, Barry shares the message with an unsympathetic Lorena and her frustrated captive, Bill. Lucky for Sookie, another vamp hears the message and takes off instantly to help Sookie.  That vamp? Erik. Score!

It’s a good thing that vamps are fast, because Sookie is in a lot of danger.  The incensed bodyguard returns to the basement, beats up Hugo and then attempts to rape Sookie. But at the last possible second she is saved…by Godric!

Hot damn this show is good!

Who knew that after taking so long to come around on TRUE BLOOD that I would love it as much as I do?! There are so many ways this show could go and I dare not predict as I know the writers will give us more than my small brain could imagine.

Talk to me.  Hoyt, Jessica, Bill, Lorena, the Newlins, Erik, Godric, black eyed Eggs, dead Daphne – I don’t care. I’m up for it all.  Best storyline for you?  Thoughts (not spoilers) on where this is all going?  Do you think Eggs is working for Maryann by his own will? Will Jason find Sookie? Will Erik get to Sookie before Bill is able to? So much to chat about.  The comments are open!

It seems everywhere I go to discuss the show everyone kind of glazes over the fact that Maryanne is the DEVIL. I mean, she is completely evil. I don’t know if they were trying to say that she is the devil or if they were trying to say she is just an evil entity. Earlier they mentioned that she is immortal. I may be jumping the gun but that is a HUGE thing to wrap your head around. She can control all of people’s bad emotions, desires, and basically brings sin about. Crazyness.

I can’t grasp the Maryanne thing either….what is she exactly? But the bottom line is that she is evil and powerful. I don’t think Eggs has any idea on the evilness of Maryanne. I feel as though he was an innocent just like Tara. One thing that throws me off is what does Eric want with Sookie so badly? And since he didn’t glamour Lafayette what kind of a hold does he have on him? I am guessing that since Godric saved Sookie he will then be found by Eric who is on his way to help Sookie and that is how she will be ultimately saved which will then mean she owes Eric big time!!! If Sookie tries to help Tara then Bill may have to step in and go up against Maryanne. Who do you think will win??? This season is fantastic and I’m fully a True Blood addict!!!!

I think Eggs is completely innocent. He doesn’t seem to understand how evil Maryann is. Sookie, I think, is some kind of special breed. Like Maryanne with Sam, Eric can’t control Sookie. Meaning sookie has a power over him that most other humans dont. In fact, I don’t think Sookie is fully human. Lafayette isn’t under any kind of hold but he is just very scared. I think, like Terry, He’s suffering from PTSD. His fear pushes him into decisions.

Can I just say, I love Jessica & Hoyt 🙂

Kath, something you said sparked a question I didn’t think about last night…why is Andy immune to Maryann? I don’t think he has gotten the black eyes at either of her orgies. And (spoiler alert, just in case) as far as I can remember from the books, Andy is just plain old human, so not sure what’s going on there.

Thanks for the recap! I love this show. I was so super happy when Sam punched Daphne in the face when he was escapiing from the crazy orgy. I wanted him to punch her in the face the entire rest of the episode and I was perfectly happy with Eggs stabbing her. (I mean suck that Eggs is doing the crazy evil stuff but glad Daphne is gone) Poor Sam.

And I get how Maryanne makes them act evil. But when she came inside with the nasty dirty feet and the dead rabbit that just happened to be running by and she thought – hmmm I’d like rabbit soup. She would have to go. And after Tara said she’s so weird and then Eggs is all “Yeah Isn;t it great?” Um What??

Love me some Jason Stackhouse. Glad he beat on Gabe some. Loved pretty much all of that.

I pretty much do not get Lorena keeping Bill inthe room. Interesting to see that staying up in the day makes them bleed out of nose and ears, but overall I just don’t get it. I mean if his plan is just to make Sookie mad at Bill, it would seem that he could just say that Eric sent this Crazy vampire to my room and there was nothing I could do and it would backfire on Eric. I jsut don’t get it, I guess.

I was suspicous of hugo from the beginning because his thoughts were i love her forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and honestly – who has thoughts like that? ANd i didn’t realize that whole telepathy thing could work over long distances like that. Hmmmmm who knew?

Definitely looking forward to next week. 🙂

    Great episode today!!
I fear that Maryanne had Daphne killed so she can blame it on Sam, that’s my guess. Because at the Comic Con Exclusive Trailer we see him in jail…
    what do you think?

I’m more concerned about Jason. Mrs. Newlin clearly shot at Jason and he went down. We can’t loose Jason! I love his story line! And if I remember right, Jason told Mrs. Newlin about his sister or was it that he knew a vampire and saw him die?

Oh Good Governor! How did I forget about Sarah shooting Jason? I’m a horrible blogger!

I have no doubt that Jason will be fine. I wonder if maybe she didn’t use a real gun…I don’t know why I got that impression.

    Thanks for bringing it up.

You got the fake gun impression because it looks strangely identical to the paint ball pistol we saw Jason using to shoot vampire cutouts while in the jeep with Steve.

This show continues to make me love it, even though it is SO different from the books (and for me, that is usually a recipe for disaster!). Another solid episode!

Not trying to spoil anything, but if they stay with the book. Eggs is not as good as he seems and i THINK he knows about Maryann. Maryann is NOT the devil. She’s a maenad. For the supertrailer it looks like Erik wins Sookie over. Also Jason did NOT get shot with a real gun. it was a paintball gun. You see in the supertrailer he talking to Sarah with a paint stain on his shirt. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I want to alse see whats goin on with Lafayette. We all know he was supposed to de in the first book. Also I really wanna know whats up with Eggs too. Anybody notice that Daphne died by the same sword Maryann was gonna kill Sam with. That must be a knife for killing supernaturals.

“maryann” wants tribute. she’s “owed.” she is not the devil in the books, she is a maenad. her opinions of what is good and bad is completely different than that of humans or even vampires. she likes bars, drunks, sex. andy’s drunkeness makes her happy. I am not sure where they are going with all of this but I would take anything daphne said with a grain of salt.

Finally got caught up this weekend–rewatched all of season 1 on Blu-Ray followed by the 7 episodes of season 2 that were on my DVR. Season 2 is EXCELLENT–I’m enjoying it even more than season 1! The one new character I can’t stand is the Vibrating Woman–they seem to be dragging along with her character and I’m already sick of her. Was anyone else looking for the briefcase in the scene with Jessica & Hoyt?! 🙂 I love those two together!
