About Last Night…THE X FACTOR, SUBURGATORY, MODERN FAMILY and More

Wednesday night TV always feels deceptively calm, and yet I rarely am able to tackle it all in one night. Am I the only one with that problem? (I think it’s the two-hour X FACTOR performances that always mess me up. I’m lulled into a false sense of security over the number of shows I watch.)

Let’s talk about what was on television last night…

Hey, contestants on THE X FACTOR — I’m pretty sure most of you didn’t didn’t follow the “rock” category rules for the night. Josh was the only act that followed the rules…and ended up having the best performance of the night. Rock on, Josh. (And Stacy, please get back to the contestant we all went crazy over. The last few weeks have been a hot mess.)

Tessa turned 16 on SUBURGATORY and by far the best part of the episode was her awkward dancing to her favorite band. Sure, George and Shelia were appropriately hilarious as nurse and patient, but nothing could compare to poor Tessa dancing by herself to that terrible music.

It was kind of weird to leave one back issue on SUBURGATORY and go straight into another one on MODERN FAMILY. Thankfully, in this case, Jay had Phil to give him a massage. Unfortunately for Jay, he accidentally told his son-in-law he loved him during the experience. (Something Jay didn’t even hear, due to an important work-related text.) Their awkward dynamic is always fun to explore, as Phil so desperately does want to be loved by Jay. (I actually can’t imagine how much Phil would have freaked out had he heard what Jay said.) Also, the episode featured the return of Fizbo (in the form of Cam’s sleep actions), so all was right in the MODERN FAMILY universe.

Given that Shawn was locked up in a mental hospital, he did behave relatively well throughout PSYCH last night. However, having Gus go undercover with him as an orderly made everything ten times funnier. Shawn is normally the one with the power in their friendship, so to have that dynamic reversed was a fun beat to play out.

Didn’t make it to SVU or AMERICAN HORROR STORY last night (though Ben did recap AHS here), but I’m hoping to catch up on them both today.

What did you think of last night’s TV?
