SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Mia Michaels on Having a Show Dedicated to Her Routines

August 14, 2012 by

Wednesday night’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE is going to be a pretty special one for long-time fans of the series: the top 14 dancers will be tackling fan-favorite previously performed routines that were choreographed by Mia Michaels.

Given how many dancers point to Michaels and her work as being one of the things they’re most excited about experiencing once they reach the top 20, this week could be quite something, as they’ll have the chance to pay homage to the choreographer they admire and take part in some of the routines they’ve loved in the past.

To celebrate the occasion, I talked with Michaels between rehearsals about what viewers can expect from Wednesday’s episode, what routine she wishes had made the cut, what it means to her to have an episode dedicated to her work and more…

What Mia Michaels routine are you hoping to see on Wednesday night?

Honestly, I’m a little skeptical about this. I absolutely admire Mia’s work on the show, but an entire episode? I just don’t know.

One of the things I love about SYTYCD is the variety of choreography in each episode and seeing each dancer in their own style having to step up and adapt. Another favorite aspect is being surprised by the original choreography each week. Good or bad, it’s original content. It seems like this episode will automatically strip away both of those elements and put the contemporary dancers in a fairly decisive advantage. I guess I feel like this should be more of an exhibition show (like the finale when they revisit favorite routines), not a week of competition routines.

All that said, I’m glad that SYTYCD is *finally* back, and I will absolutely be watching tonight. Who knows, hopefully they’ll surprise me.

@Cori: That’s fair. I think what excites/terrifies me about Wednesday’s show is that these ARE familiar routines, but they could have entirely new interpretations by these dancers. I feel like because we’ve never seen THESE dancers tackle them, it keeps the anxiety level up.
