RAY DONOVAN: Octavius J. Johnson Teases ‘Sunny’

August 29, 2014 by

RayDonovan_208_octaviusOn Sunday’s brand new episode of RAY DONOVAN, the fight over Marvin — and the rights to his music — is escalating rapidly. But for Marvin’s portrayer, things are a little bit more clear-cut.

“I think that he definitely wants to be with Cookie,” Octavius J. Johnson (Marvin) shared. “Cookie is just getting out of prison, and he has the connections, and it seems like he can capitalize on Marvin’s success, so he definitely wants to hang with Cookie. He appreciates the earrings, and I think he thinks his gun is cool — all of that stuff. He wants to be with Cookie more than anyone.”

To further emphasize what’s at stake, Sunday’s hour, “Sunny,” also features Marvin and Bridget recording a track.

“It’s different, because you’re trying to sing, you’re in character, you have the camera a few inches away from your face,” Johnson pointed out about singing in character. “It’s not like you’re being a solo artist with a booth by yourself, with the producers [on the other side of the glass]. It’s definitely that different element added, and I felt it. But it was fun.”

Of course, Ray has been firm about his dislike of Marvin’s relationship with Bridget — and she records Sunday’s song behind her parents’ back — so odds are great he won’t be thrilled with the latest turn of events.

“Ray tries to avoid Marvin, because Marvin’s just a kid, but he worries Marvin’s up to no good with his daughter,” Johnson explained. “I think Ray’s smarter than that, but the one time he did put his gun in Marvin’s mouth because he did get a little rough with Bridget. Ray definitely has humanity, and he realizes that wasn’t right of him, doing that to a kid. I think you see the distance that Ray is trying to keep from Marvin, as well as Bridget away from him.”

Fortunately for Johnson, his real relationship with Liev Schreiber (Ray) is significantly better than the one they share on-screen.

“Liev, he’s a really cool guy, he’s a nice guy,” he said. “We’ve talked out things before, and he’s very vocal when we have a scene together. It’s [only] been few, but when we have a scene together, he’s been very open — especially after we try [things out]. He directed the last episode, and he lets you have that freedom to do whatever you want, and if he has input, he’ll also vocalize that as well.”

RAY DONOVAN airs Sundays at 9 PM on Showtime.
