ONCE UPON A TIME: Jennifer Morrison and Colin O’Donoghue Tease Hook and Emma’s First Real Date

October 19, 2014 by

ONCE UPON A TIME’s Hook and Emma are going on what series star Colin O’Donoghue (Hook) has dubbed an “old-fashioned date” in tonight’s episode, and it will allow viewers to see a new side to the duo’s relationship.

“They’re trying to have some sort of normal relationship –” O’Donoghue told reporters on the show’s set earlier this week.

“We’re never going to have a normal relationship,” Jennifer Morrison (Emma) jokingly interjected.

“[And] the date itself goes really well, but there are other struggles that arc on behind it,” O’Donoghue continued. “Hook has made a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to get his hand back so that he can have it to be able to hold Emma, as he says. He’s worried the hand is cursed. He doesn’t want to have any secrets from Emma, and he’s worried by having this…but the date goes well.”

While Morrison teased the episode has “a good kiss, according to the editors,” the hour also allowed the writers to show how this relationship is different for both of them.

“I think what’s really nice about the date is you see how much they both care, and effort they’re both putting into it,” she noted. “It’s the first time Emma is wearing something that is softer, and gentler, and sweeter, and romantic. To me, that was really important, because I wanted it to be, symbolically, very different from the other times we’ve seen her on the date. We saw her with the guy who was the perpetrator she was after [in the pilot] that was a ruse, just playing a character to catch this guy, the stereotypical date look. We saw her on a date with Walsh when she was in New York, and she still had to make her own way, she was a single mom, and there was the black leather, and there was still something tough and edgy about that. She really likes this guy. And she’s really genuine about it. And it needs to be something you can find in Storybrooke because she wouldn’t have had something like that in her wardrobe. So it needs to look like it could come from Storybrooke, but also something she feels comfortable in. It’s definitely the softest, most romantic side of her. And the fact that she feels safe enough, and inspired to express that part of herself to him, I think was a really important thing to show.”

“Hook has made a real effort here,” O’Donoghue added. “This is the first he’s changed [his clothes] in hundreds of years. He’s really trying to fit in, and really trying to make a life for himself, so I’d guess he does feel a little bit vulnerable. But he’s pretty good at adapting.”

But there is one more — normal-ish — obstacle the couple have to deal with: Emma lives at home.

“I still live with my parents….there hasn’t been time to work out the living situation yet,” Morrison laughed. “I’m getting ready to go, and there’s no escaping the fact that Mom and Dad are wandering by.”
