AFTER THE DANCE, THE VOICE, THE STORY OF SOAPS

THE STORY OF SOAPS – ABC and PEOPLE present “The Story of Soaps,” a two-hour prime-time television event highlighting the iconic impact of the soap opera. Featuring an incredible panel of experts and voices, “The Story of Soaps” airs TUESDAY, MAY 19 (9:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC. (ABC)

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

AFTER THE DANCE: It’s hard, because I don’t really know how the post-doc special could have lived up to the quality of THE LAST DANCE, and, well, it didn’t. It almost felt like an after-show special, for better or worse. I also do wish they had focused on other athletes as opposed to, well, Anthony Anderson. (He would have been fine for half the time.)

THE VOICE: Considering the show did as close to a proper finale as they could, it was actually really impressive how full/star-studded it was. If you had told me two former coaches would be performing in the opening number, I don’t know that Shakira and Cee Lo would have been in my top five guesses, but what a fun surprise.

Todd felt like the least surprising winner in a very, very long time, but I remain absolutely fascinated by the fact that his winning song was a SONGLAND tune.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: Constantine and Zari 2.0 went there, huh?

I wish the zombie episode had been a little more fun, but at least next week’s hour should be straight-up bonkers.

THE STORY OF SOAPS: Man, I loved this. I kept thinking as I watched it that I wish this had gotten THE LAST DANCE treatment, because so much of the genre wasn’t really tackled. We didn’t even dive into teen soaps! But I really appreciated the special didn’t shy away from ABC controversies, including Luke’s rape of Laura on GENERAL HOSPITAL, and the cancellations of ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

I was a little disappointed how dismissive Andy Cohen was of the genre in modern times, though. I get it, he has something to sell, but I would have much rather heard about how the remaining shows are fighting to stay alive than watch him self-promote.
