[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 8 finale.]With CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) missing, Intelligence sprung into action to try and save their colleague.

Ruzek is struggling to keep it together and is prepared to do anything he needs to do to find her,” showrunner Rick Eid teased ahead of the hour. “Voight wants to find her whereabouts as well, but there are certain rules in place and things they can and can’t do. There are different perspectives on police reform within the team, among the team members. Atwater and Halstead have a different perspective on this than Ruzek and Voight.”

Indeed, Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) got into a physical fight over how far to go. Eventually, Voight opted to split the team, with Atwater, Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), and Trudy (Amy Morton) together, while Ruzek and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) went off with Voight.

As Ruzek spiraled, Upton warned her friend he needed to get himself in line for Makayla, Burgess’ daughter, because if anything happened, he’d have custody of the young girl. He eventually relented.

But the duo also realized that Voight had taken it upon himself to track down the worst of the leads, to do what was needed to save Burgess. When Upton found Voight with a suspect, who was clearly attacked, she tried to talk her boss down.

“What did you think we were going to do? You want me to bring him down to district and arrest him?” Voight asked. “Hailey, I didn’t want you to come here. I didn’t tell you to come here.”

Upton made her case to Voight that they could come up with a way out of this, and he relented—until the perp attacked him, going for Voight’s gun, forcing Upton to shoot him.

“You did the right thing,” Voight promised her. But then he told her to go home; he’d take care of things. Since he didn’t call his location in, he disposed of the body.

But a clearly shaken Upton returned to Halstead and had a request: Marry her.

There was some good news: Burgess, who was found, “lost a lot of blood, but she’s fighting.”
