Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

THE MASKED SINGER: In hindsight, I’m extremely embarrassed I didn’t realize that was Lou Diamond Phillips performing. But how great was he?! Such a delightful surprise. (Sorry to the LA Charger, who I would not have been able to guess if I had been given a billion chances. He’s very good, though, too.)

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS: I’m someone who absolutely can get emotional at episodes. I’ve cried over TV. I’ve screamed and laughed and rolled my eyes at countless episodes.

But, oh my God, I cannot recall the last time I cried like this.

Honestly, kudos to anyone who watched it live. I had to take multiple breaks while watching my screener, and even then, I was emotionally demolished for hours.

It was one thing to quasi-come to terms with Gary being on the verge of dying. And thank God he hasn’t gotten to that point yet. (Good luck to my emotional well-being when I watch the series finale, I assume.) This was unrelenting heartbreak, but also mixed in with random bouts of laughter (mostly courtesy of Gary’s dark humor) and just…grief.

It hit me while watching this episode that outside of the obvious parallel with the series starting with a friend dying and ending with another friend dying…it’s also juxtaposing the different types of grief. When Jon died, it was unexpected to the friend group. There was no goodbye. They were blindsided and shocked, and the grief was sudden. This is a slower death, which obviously has its own hardships, but also is allowing everyone to say their goodbyes. Let Gary know how beloved he is.

And it makes sense Danny would struggle with this. He was so young when his father died, and Gary really was a second father to him…and now he has to lose that person, too.

Look, I’m not going to pretend it’s fair. We knew from the start of the season that Gary would have to live with his cancer for the rest of his life. But I was hoping it would be a couple of decades. This is entirely too short.

But Gary is also at peace. He got time with his son. He knows he did everything he could to fight this. And he got to marry Maggie and will presumably spend his remaining days/weeks/months with the people he loves. It’s absolutely gut-wrenching, but I didn’t hate it.
