CHICAGO MED Season 8 Finale Recap: An Old Friend Returns to Help a Doctor Say Goodbye

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, May 24 season finale of CHICAGO MED, “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?”]

CHICAGO MED’s eighth season concluded with the return of a familiar face—and a farewell to a series regular.

With OR 2.0 a clear danger to the hospital, Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Dr. Song (TV Carpio) manipulated the machine to malfunction during an important surgery, unbeknownst to Crockett (Dominic Rains), who was actually performing the surgery.

Will, for his part, took the fall for what happened, and handed in his letter of resignation.

“You can’t go,” Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) said as he cleared out his locker.

“I have to, Maggie,” he insisted.

He then went to the ED and spoke to his colleagues.  “I’m sorry I have to say goodbye,” Will told the crowd. “This is not easy. You’ve been my family for so many years. I’ll never forget you. You’ll always be a part of me. And I’ll always be grateful for the time we had together.”

But it wasn’t all bad news: Will flew to Seattle where he reunited with his former fiancee Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and her son, Owen.

“Is that all you brought?” she said, referring to his small bag.

“I didn’t know how long you’d want me to stay,” he said.

“I’m never going to let you go,” she said, embracing him.

Earlier in the season, the CHICAGO MED bosses alluded to a cast member returning for a guest spot this season.

“There’s a good chance…we have one of the [former cast members] we’d like to bring back,” CHICAGO MED co-showrunner Diane Frolov previously told Give Me My Remote. And who might that be? All she will preview is that the person on their wish list is “a beloved character.”

And, yes, this does mark the end of Gehlfuss’ tenure on the series; GMMR has confirmed this was the actor’s final episode as a regular on MED.
