CHICAGO MED’s Ethan (Brian Tee) took a step forward in the Wednesday, May 18 hour, “Lying Doesn’t Protect You From the Truth,” as he went to see his father’s (secret) long-term partner.

Though Ethan only learned of the man after his father’s death, a look around the man’s house made it clear the separation was one-sided: Photos of Ethan’s family were everywhere—he had loved them all, too, from afar.

“It’s Ethan’s evolution; it really is,” Tee explains in the video below of the doctor making the gesture to reach out. “I feel like Ethan has experienced a lot, especially from last season into this season. He’s gone through a lot of PT, and not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. I think if you get shot and nearly die, also lose the love of your life, and then [deal with] the passing of the father, all within the same year—that changes a person.”

“Now, I feel that Ethan is seeing a lot more colors of gray, instead of it being so black and white, instead of it being so Xs and Os, and doing everything by the law, or the book, or by the numbers,” he continues. “I think he’s evolving into this human being and accepting the situations that arise to him and really living through his heart, more than his head. And that’s what I love about him. And especially in this situation, that is exactly what he’s trying to do.”

Back at the hospital, however, things are a bit more alarming, as Dr. Blake (Sarah Rafferty) opted to have surgery in the hopes of saving her medical career—a move that could take her of the hospital for a couple of months.

“In CHICAGO MED, everyone is a family,” Tee notes. “Whether they have these close bonds or relationships like Dean and Ethan do, or whether it’s this camaraderie of being under the same roof in this [hospital]. I think we all sincerely care. I think we all sincerely hope that she’ll be okay. I think she’s an incredible surgeon—and addition to our cast, especially—but definitely an addition to [the hospital], in general.”

“For Blake and situation, I think we’re all in it together,” he adds.
