Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

THE VOICE: As someone who loves tater tots—and had them for dinner before watching this screener—I appreciate Reba’s gift, no matter how weird it is. (Though I assume not a single person is actually picking the coach based on their gift.)

The premiere was very, very, very, very produced; it feels like they thought they had to throw everything at the wall because it was the first episode sans Blake Shelton. (Also, Niall having a buzzer with Blake’s sayings was funny.)

But there was some real, great talent: Jordan Rainer was great, and of course she went to Team Reba (anyone else would have been a travesty); Josslyn Rose is GOOD; Alexa Wildish feels like she could be a wild card. And, of course, they ended the episode with a cliffhanger.

KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: Normally, I try to eat while watching food-adjacent shows so I don’t get hungry. This? Yikes.

It’s fascinating to see people in such denial about how bad things are—it always makes me wonder how they react when things air. (Also, if I had eaten at this restaurant and saw how bad the food storage was, I might…well, get sick, too.) But it felt like a good episode to get people back into this franchise…notably terrible in some ways, but still a group of people that you hope can pull it together. Fingers crossed this actually helps.

THE IRRATIONAL: I wrote this on Twitter, but this very much felt like a 2009 procedural—and I mean that in a good way. The show lives and dies by Jesse L. Martin—at least right now—and he steps up, getting to use his “superpower” to get to the heart of the crime.

And, naturally, he has his own tragic past/a case that’s going to haunt him. It’s an enjoyable pilot, and I’m intrigued to see where it goes from here.
