LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT Post-Mortem: Aimé Donna Kelly on What’s Next Post-Maddie and the Squad’s Newest Addition

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Thursday, February 22 episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT.]

Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) finally found Maddie (Allison Elaine) on the Thursday, February 22 episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT.

The break came when the teen was taken on a train—drugged and dressed like a boy—and she was able to slip a note to the passenger behind her that said simply: “Call NYPD.”

Olivia teamed up with FBI Agent Shannah Sykes (Jordana Spiro) and their teams, ultimately finding Maddie in a cabin…where her latest captor (after she had been sold) watched her—a peeping Tom. Though Maddie was upset and understandably traumatized, it seemed like she was physically unharmed.

Later, the Commissioner (Robert Newman) heralded the victory of SVU and the FBI in bringing Maddie back home. But despite that major win, it’s not like things will calm down for the squad.

“With SVU, the cases don’t stop,” Aimé Donna Kelly, who plays new squad member Captain Renee Curry, previews to Give Me My Remote. “Even though we wrapped up this particular Maddie case, trust me: What comes next is just as exciting and will keep viewers engaged for a very, very long time. So just wait, hang in there. There’s more to tackle. There’s more to do at SVU.”

One thing possibly in store? Seeing more of Curry’s personal life. “I think it’s going to be fun, right?” Kelly says. “Once the fans get to know Curry a little bit more, and once we start to see how she interacts with these cases and with the rest of the squad, it’s going to be fun to see how her personal life comes into play.”

“I think, obviously, Curry was maybe used to keeping her personal life separate from work especially coming from IAB and all of that,” she continues. “But now that she’s actually making friends and opening up a little bit, yeah, you can definitely see Curry’s personal life maybe coming in a little bit more into play.”

And now, Curry isn’t the only new member of the team: Sykes is being loaned out to SVU, too.

“Our characters are so different,” Kelly acknowledges of the two squad newbies. “And when you add Benson, the three of us are very strong, very smart women, but also very, very different. We approach cases [from] all of these different angles. And I think the fans are really going to enjoy seeing these three badass women take on the world and win. How often do we get to see women win? So it’s so fun to watch the three of us work together and help people who really need it.”

But where does Fin (Ice T) stand with Curry after those donuts (and beer), plus the team’s big win? “I mean, Fin’s a tough one to crack,” Kelly says with a laugh. “I feel like it’s probably going to take a couple of baked goods to really win him over to my side.”
