THE VOICE: Asher HaVon Reflects on His Life-Changing Blind Audition

Months before his THE VOICE season 25 journey culminated in a victory, Asher HaVon started his (on-screen) journey on the NBC series by performing Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” at his Blind Audition.

“I had just broke up with my partner, and I remember our vocal coach, Trelawny [Rose], as always, she’s always at the stage, making sure that we’re warmed up,” HaVon recalls to Give Me My Remote in the video below. “She would always say, ‘Ground yourself, ground yourself.’”

“And when she looked at me [before the Blind Audition], I just burst out and started crying,” he continues. “I’m just in her arms, she’s like my mama. And I remember her saying to me, she said, ‘Asher, go set fire to the rain.’ Mmm. What she told me that for? Hunny, I tried to set fire to everything I saw, okay? So it was in that moment where I felt so empowered, and I just wanted to sing that song down.”

The coaches were impressed with HaVon’s vocals quickly, with Chance the Rapper pushing his button to turn during the opening lyric of the performance, with Dan + Shay and Reba McEntire joining in. But for HaVon, it was clear from the start who he was going to pick.

“I had already knew I was gonna choose Reba,” he says. “Before I left home, I said, ‘If Reba turned for me, I’m choosing Reba.’ She was my clear choice from the start, I’ve always loved her. Being young, dreaming, as so many teenagers and kids do, I used to watch her show with my mom…saying, ‘It’d be so cool to be on her show,’ not knowing that she would be my mentor, my coach on THE VOICE. So it was like a full circle moment.”
