LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters Look Back at ‘Fault’

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT has had its fair share of truly evil characters, but in the show’s first decade, few caused as much damage to the squad as Victor Paul Gitano (portrayed by Lou Diamond Phillips).

Though Gitano didn’t have a whole lot of screen time in 2006’s “Fault,” his presence was brutal: he killed three members of a family and kidnapped the two youngest children. Because he had been following the kids for a bit, it was fairly easy for the 1-6 to figure out who their guy was…and he was a pathological liar, killer, with a history of sexual assault.

Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) and their colleagues thought they had him in their sights, but when Gitano sliced Benson’s throat, Stabler opted to try to save her instead of rescuing one of the children. The decision had a domino effect:  the boy died, Stabler took it out on Benson, and when the situation was flipped, she was unable to kill him Gitano (who had taken Elliot hostage). Though the duo was able to stall Gitano long enough for a sniper to take him out (and rescue the young girl he had stowed away), the experience of choosing each other over the job fractured the long-standing Benson/Stabler partnership and the hour ended with her asking Cragen (Dann Florek) for a new partner.

The gripping episode was penned by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, their final for the series they spent five seasons on. (They’ve since gone on to create REAPER, AGENT CARTER, and the upcoming ABC drama EMERGENCE.) In honor of the show’s 20th anniversary, they looked back at the hour and what their time on the series taught them… Read more

Things are changing at THE CROWN, as evidenced in the new teaser for season 3.

In the show’s third season, the drama follows the Queen (now played by Olivia Colman) from 1964-1967. Per Netflix, the era “sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain. From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age – the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s – Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world.”

In addition to Colman, other new cast members include Tobias Menzies as Prince Phillip, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Ben Daniels as Tony Armstrong-Jones, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Marion Bailey as The Queen Mother, and Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

FRIENDS’ 25th Anniversary: Looking Back at the Quasi-ER Crossover

September 19, 2019 by

Fall of 1994 was a big one for NBC, as the network debuted two shows that would go on to be massive hits: FRIENDS and ER.

But when the shows were in their freshman years, they had a memorable (but odd) crossover: ER’s George Clooney and Noah Wyle guest starred in the second part of FRIENDS’ February ’95 two-parter as doctors…but not their County General characters.

Of course, their characters got entangled with Monica and Rachel (who were attempting to date the doctors while also participating in insurance fraud, which may not have been their best idea), and quickly bolted when things got weird. But for an episode, FRIENDS and ER overlapped.

Neal Baer on ER and LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Milestone Anniversaries

ER SVU Anniversary

A number of shows are reaching milestones this fall, but LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT (celebrating its 20th anniversary and milestone 21st season on television) and ER (25th anniversary) share a common thread: executive producer Neal Baer. (SVU star Mariska Hargitay also had a brief arc on ER when Baer was an EP.)

Baer, who is also a doctor, was brought on to ER for his medical expertise. “I believe I’m the first doctor-writer on TV,” he points out. While other shows broke the stories first and then added the medicine in later, “[creator] John Wells’ insight and foresight flipped it and started the foundation with [doctors], recounting our stories. So it was built on the medicine.”

Both series were ahead of their times…a move that wasn’t without risk. “I’m very grateful to NBC for allowing us for 18 years—I did seven on ER and 11 on SVU—to do these hard-hitting shows that still resonate to the audience,” Baer says.
