LIVE Blogging BeeGees Night on AMERICAN IDOL

I like the BeeGees just as much as the next gal, but a whole night dedicated to their music on AMERICAN IDOL? Not sure I’m looking forward to this one. The final four are signing two songs each. Let’s hope that they recruited Timberlake and Fallon to do a little Barry Gibb Talkshow to really make the night interesting. For now I’m just distracted by Barry Gibb’s Sean Connery impression. Has he always talked like that?

Melinda Doolittle – She sang a song I that I never heard, and I was a bit bored with it. ‘Inside and Out’…do you know it? There wasn’t anything challenging or exciting about the song. The judges weren’t overwhelmed, and I don’t think anyone watching could be either. Paula made a great point (yes, you read that correctly). She said that Melinda’s vocal is always so good that it’s no longer about her voice, it’s all about a standout performance.

A commercial for So You Think You Can Dance – starting on May 24th. YES!! I wonder what Jailbait Ivan and BF Travis are doing these days? I miss those boys.

Blake Lewis – Oh no! Blake took on ‘You Should be Dancing’. I didn’t love it. He overdid the beat boxing and I’m afraid the judges are going to rip him for it. Oh Blake I hope they like you more than I did. I’m worried that his genius of last week made him a little cocky. The judges kind of ripped it.

LaKisha Jones – A slower, sexier version of ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and I kind of dig it – a little. Again, it didn’t blow me away. I think these singers are better than a night of BeeGees music. They should have had this night much earlier and let the singers showcase their powerhouse vocals with a different genre of music. Once again the judges weren’t loving it.

Jordin Sparks – Oh I think we are ready for THE performance. She sounded amazing in the pre-performance video. She’s signing ‘To Love Somebody’ (I love this song). Damn GIRL! Jordin most certainly takes round 1 tonight. She killed it – especially the hook right near the end. Dayum this girl can sing. Judges loved her and she is definitely in the lead so far.

Melinda is back with her second song of the night, ‘How Can You Mend a Broken Heart’. This song reminds me of Notting Hill and that’s a favorite movie of mine so I’m already loving her performance (I’m easy). The song was beautiful but a bit safe but then Mindy Doo broke it wide open with that voice of hers. Well done! I got the goosebumps. Randy, Paula (and her really bad eyeshadow) loved her while Simon said the second half of the song put her in the semifinals. I thought she’s been there all along.

Blake is singing ‘This is Where I Came In’. Hmm, another one I don’t know. Oh no, he’s doing more beat boxing – Blake please don’t overuse this. If you don’t pull it off you are going to get skewered. I’ll say this about his performance – he made the song sound like it could be a hit on the radio today. The arrangement was completely contemporary. I have no ideas of the judges are going to dig it or not, but I really, really did. First up – Randy called him out on beat boxing on every song. Paula and I were on the same page thinking it could be a hit on the radio now. Simon wasn’t pleased and thought it was a bizarre song choice. To each their own.

Back from break and Seacrest is talking to Judge Judy and NOT Julie Cooper-Nichols (Melinda Clarke). Come on Ryan..know your audience.

LaKisha is signing ‘Run to Me’ and guess what…I don’t know this song either. I guess I’m a fan of the BeeGees greatest hits and that’s it. Ok with the risk of getting killed for this comment, I think I’d like LaKisha to go home this week. I’m not denying her talent, and she clearly proved it on this song, but I don’t think she is going to bring anything new to the music industry. The judges were “ok” with it. None were blown away.

Closing the show tonight is Jordin. Ms. Sparks is taking on ‘Woman in Love’ and again I think she’s going to be phenomenal because thing song is just amazing. Well, it’s certainly her night…she picked the right song for her voice and sold it. Jordin really performed the hell out of the song tonight. Well done girlie girl. The judges and I weren’t watching the same performance because known of them loved it. When the judges and I are that far off, I wonder if maybe I should go back and watch again. But I tell you, I write this blog as I’m watching each performance and I go with my gut, so that’s that.

So I’m barely watching Idol right now in Phoenix and OMG Jordan is totally wearing my dress!! I just bought that BCBG dress a couple of weeks ago and wore it to a friends wedding last week! Hah!

I thought Jordin’s second song was out of tune and was glad the judges called her on it. But I’m a music major, I get tested on finding out of tune notes. Not everybody is like, oh my god, that note did not fit in that chord! 😉 As long as the public likes it, it is American Idol after all.

Talkin’ it up on the Barry Gibb Talk Show. Talkin’ ’bout issues, talkin’ ’bout (pause) real important issues.

I agree about Woman In Love, it was phenomenal. A tiny bit pitchy, but “the show” of it was wonderful.

Kathie, I vaguely remembered all of the songs except the one Blake did that no one knew. I am 38 so I guess that dates me a bit! 🙂 Only on American Idol would they criticize a singer for “only” singing well and thus boring the audience. Sheesh! Now I have You Should Be Dancin’ (yeah!) stuck in my head, but I am enjoying it.

Kath- I love the Bee Gees ( always had a thing for Robin ya know …The whole skinny with long hair thing) I can share this I have never noticed Barry Gibb talk like that. It irked me the whole night.I’m glad you picked up on it!

Yeah, the Sean Connery accent was bugging me all night also. I kept looking at him and thinking, “Where is that coming from?” until a thought came to mind that it could be his false teeth; (not that he has any) but it sure sounded like that!
