Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Friday, February 20, 2009

February 20, 2009 by

I think we should all take a minutes and appreciate the current state of TV.  Yes TV has it’s problems (and you can blame Ben Silverman for most of them), but what I find so amazing is that every single night of the week you can find at least one, but usually two of three high quality, thoroughly entertaining shows.  With the exception of Saturday, there’s not an “off” night on TV.

Once upon a time the only new programming on Friday nights was a WWE match.  Now you’ve got two of the best scripted dramas on TV: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and BATTLESTAR; one of the smartest comedies in PSYCH; and potentially a break out hit in DOLLHOUSE, among others.  Appreciate it while you can.

FYI: I added in a video for each of the shows. Whether it’s a promo or a scene from tonight’s episode, they are all somewhat spoilerific so watch at your own risk. Let me know if you like this format or if you’d prefer just the straight lineup.

My DVR is set…is yours?

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles | 8pm on Fox
“Desert Cantos”
The Connors visit a town connected to the destroyed factory; Weaver sends a man into town in search of a survivor.

Friday Night Lights | 9pm on NBC
It Ain’t Easy Being J.D. McCoy”
The new quarterback, J.D. McCoy, becomes a victim of hazing; Matt and Julie get closer after spending some time together at the lake; a woman claims that Cash owes her child support.

Dollhouse | 9pm on Fox
“The Target”
Echo becomes the female counterpart to an outdoorsman; Agent Ballard is encouraged when he receives a clue to Echo’s true identity. [GMMR: All eyes on DOLLHOUSE tonight.  The newbie needs the ratings. But after last week’s somewhat disappointment showing and the mediocre fan and press reaction, I’m not sure there’s going to be an uptick in the numbers.]

Monk | 9pm on USA
Mr. Monk Fights City Hall”
When the parking garage where his wife was killed is set for demolition, Monk intervenes, but finds himself investigating the disappearance of a city official who is key to preserving the site.

Psych | 10pm on USA
An Evening with Mr. Yang
The famed Yin Yang serial killer, who disappeared years ago after eluding capture, returns with sights set on Shawn. [GMMR: Get in line, Yang.]

Battlestar Galactica | 10pm on Sci Fi
“Deadlock”

Ellen reunites with the “Final Five” Cylons; the rebel Cylons consider abandoning the Colonial fleet.

What will YOU be watching?

BSG, FNL, Psych, and Dollhouse…Friday night has not only become a good night to watch TV, somehow it has become my favorite night of TV!

The only thing I’ll be watching/DVRing is Conan’s last show from NY. I love Conan!!

I have TSCC and Dollhouse both ont he DVR. And two discs of S3BSG – I am trying to catchup! I might be skipping ahead this weekend and watching what BSG episodes I have on Demand.

I will watch Dollhouse even if it is the more horrifically terrible thing ever to come to television out of loyalty to Joss. Sad but true.

I will say this, not as much is defense of Joss Whedon because I don’t think he needs me for that, but more from a personal perspective. Had I turned on watch BUFFY back in it first season the show would NOT have had me as a long time watcher. I had the advantage of hearing, from people’s whose opinion I trusted, that it was a great show. But those first few episodes of the first season of BUFFY…yeah, I wasn’t a fan. The writing was hokey. The acting was terrible.

Look at how BUFFY turned out. That’s why I’m sticking with DOLLHOUSE.

No love for DOLLHOUSE here but I’ll be happy if it gets more eyeballs as long as THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES ratings go up, too.

    Summer Glau FTW!

I liked the premiere episode of Dollhouse. i wanted more of the wittiness but I liked it. i agree with you GMMR, if I had started Buffy with Season 1, I wouldn’t have stayed there. I picked up in like Season 5. Going back & watching the old ones was great but I would have given up just starting with it. I’m more than willing to give it several episodes. The man has really done no wrong (exccept for that Connor & Cordy thing…yuck)

I’m hoping that it will far exceed their expectations for Friday.

I’m trying my best to suspend reality and just go with the flow because I love FNL… BUT, how many senior years will Lyla Garrity have? In S1 she was “engaged” to Jason Street (you have to say a person’s full name on this show) so I assumed it was their senior year. In S2 when she was a Christian I assumed she was out of school because she wasn’t hanging out in the halls. And now, in S3 she’s studying with Tim Riggins in the library. Please help me, tell me everything’s gonna be ok and it doesn’t really matter. Sorry to all you Lyla fans out there but I’d really rather have her gone than Smash.

Haha, I didn’t even think of that Jen. I’m no huge lyla fan and haven’t liked her character since basically the beginning, but as a heterosexual male I’m not really up in arms about this.
