Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Remember just a few months ago when Tuesday was a rather nothing night of TV? Yeah…not so much these days. My DVR is set and I’m going to rest up today in preparation for tonight. I’m a little down on IDOL after last week’s eliminations.  Hopefully a few people will step it up tonight.

As for LOST, I’ll try to get my mind ready for that hot mess. Overwhelmed just thinking about it.

This weekend I caught the second episode of PARENTHOOD and I have to say that I liked it even more than the first.  Are you watching it? Loving it?

Tonight FX premieres it’s newest show, JUSTIFIED. I’m hearing fantastic things about it and even with my busy TV night, I’m excited to give it a look.

What YOU are most excited to watch tonight?

American Idol | 8pm on Fox
“Top 12”
The 12 finalists perform songs by the Rolling Stones. [GMMR: This should be interesting. There are a few contestants that probably didn’t know a single song by the Stones before this week. I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure if I can sit through Aaron Kelly taking on Mick Jagger.]

The Biggest Loser | 8pm on NBC
“Cook-Off”
The players compete in a 30-minute cook-off, which requires them to prepare an appetizer, entrée and dessert using only 12 ingredients. Judges Curtis Stone and Ali pick the best-tasting entries and name the winners, who receive a weigh-in advantage.

NCIS | 8pm on CBS
“Jurisdiction”
The team investigates the murder of a Navy diver, and they work with their Coast Guard equivalent (CGIS), with whom they find some striking similarities. Agent Abigail Borin: Diane Neal

90210 | 8pm on The CW
“Girl Fight”
Naomi and Ivy come to blows while hiking with Liam; Jasper attempts to blackmail Annie about the hit-and-run accident; Silver and Teddy consider the nature of their relationship; Ryan takes a liking to a free spirit (Kelly Lynch) he meets at a bar; and the Wilsons get a surprise visitor.

Melrose Place | 9pm on The CW
“Stoner Canyon”
A new tenant (Nick Zano) moves into Auggie’s old apartment, and before long he butts heads with Lauren, who later learns he’s also the hospital’s newest resident. Meanwhile, David gets some life-changing news; and Riley asks Ben for a job, which infuriates Amanda.

CHUCK vs. The Tic Tac

“When three of my agents are arrested for treason in 24 hours, it reflects poorly on me.”

For all of you Casey’holics out there, tonight must have been some kind of binge.  With the relationship woes of Chuck and Sarah taking up so much screen time, lately it feels that Casey has been a bit of an after thought.  At times it seemed like the writers weren’t sure what to do with the guy, and he seemed like an outsider just along for the ride rather than an integral member of Team Bartowski. But tonight we learned more about John Casey than I ever could have imagined. The events that unfolded within “Chuck vs. the Tic Tac” could have an impact of the remainder of the season, but is that a good thing?

While I was a big fan of the last two episodes, tonight’s ep was just okay for me. Pardon my ‘Clueless’ reference, but tonight’s ep was a bit of a Monet. From far away, it’s okay; but up close, it’s a big ol’ mess. There were elements of the story that worked really well, but others that fell short, mostly due to the shortcomings of the writers room and some questionable directing.

When is TRUE BLOOD Coming Back?

Need a vamp fix?  Yeah, us too.  But if you’re looking for the kind of vamps that hang out in Bon Temps you’re going to have to wait just a little bit longer.

Today HBO announced that its hit show TRUE BLOOD will return for its third season on June 13th.  Can you wait that long to see Jason Stackhouse shirtless?  It’s cruel that we have to.

I don’t know about you but I’m thrilled to be able to put that date down on my calendar.

It’s just another manic Monday, and my situation isn’t helped by this whole daylight savings time switcharoo. I’m exhausted this morning. Maybe a little more so after looking at tonight’s TV lineup. Great stuff ahead of course, but a busy, bust Monday night per usual.

Let’s get to it.

Chuck | 8pm on NBC
“Chuck vs. the Tic Tac”

Chuck and Sarah must break Casey out of jail and clear his name after he inadvertently commits treason; Ellie gets her dream fellowship.[GMMR: If you’re a fan of John Casey (and who isn’t?) then you’ll be digging tonight’s episode. If you’ve avoided spoilers this long, then I’m proud of you. You’ll be rewarded with some really jaw dropping story lines tonight.]

House | 8pm on Fox
“Black Hole”
A high school senior repeatedly hallucinates after blacking out during a class trip; Wilson tries to furnish his condo.

Life Unexpected | 8pm on The CW
“Formal Reformed”
Jones asks Lux to the winter formal; Baze discovers a condom in Lux’s room; Cate struggles with painful memories about the night Lux was conceived.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager | 8pm on ABC Family
“I Got You, Babe”
Ricky seeks legal help in his quest for joint custody of his son, while Adrian assists Amy in preparing for court. Elsewhere, George gives Anne a deadline for a wedding ceremony; a romantic evening awaits Grace and Ben; and Ashley considers progressing to the next step in her relationship with Grant.

THE AMAZING RACE: “Put your boobs on the ground and drag ’em over here”

March 14, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, The Amazing Race

“The War is Over. Is the war over because of this message or because it took us so long to get here?”

Having missed last week’s episode of THE AMAZING RACE, I more than ready to watch the remaining teams race to the finish line tonight. After learning that my favorite team, Jeff & Jordan, were spared due to a non-elimination leg, I was a bit nervous. Could they rebound? Would they live to race another week?  If not, how what reality show would cast Jeff next? I’m not ready for him to be out of my life…or at least off my TV.

Tonight the remaining teams raced through France in a series of old world challenges.  The first order of business was breakfast.  Tasked with finding a specific bakery, the teams had to ask the baker for a baguette and then had to figure out that the clue was baked inside.  (I’m craving a french baguette right now, btw.) An easy task to start off the day, only Jeff seemed to be a little tripped up as to how to find their clue.  That minor snafu really set the tone for the rest of the leg.

In the Detour, the teams had to visit a French/German war reenactment site and choose between tasks that asked them to find a clue via Morse code or get it by going in the trenches.  The first task took patience and concentration, not easy while in the middle of a chaotic war setting.  The second task was equally daunting as it required the teams to travel 100 yards under barbwire to retrieve their clue, and then back the same 100 yards. Talk about a no win situation.

AMERICAN IDOL Top 8 Guys Performance Show

March 11, 2010 by
Filed under American Idol, American Idol Recap, TV News

Were the AMERICAN IDOL guys actually pretty good last night or was the bar set so low that they didn't have to do much to overcome the monstrosity of the first few weeks?  Either way, the better they guys are, the more enjoyable the episodes. I'll take what I can get.

I'm anxious to hear what YOU thought of each of last night's contestants, so let's get right to it. Starting with my favorites and ending with the "dawg" that I think she be sent home tonight, here's my take on each of last night's performances.

Michael Lynche: Who would have thought that Big Mike would have ever made it to the top of my list?  But he's right there...with a few reservations.  Lynche's take on "This Woman's Work" was most definitely the best vocal of the night.  I really didn't know Mike had that falsetto in him.  So bizarre coming out of such a big guy.  I really enjoyed listening to his performance, but I can't say I loved watching him.  Let's be honest, Big Mike is a huge cheeseball. The way he dances around the stage in an attempt to perform really irks me. It just rings false.  But he's trying, I'll give him that.  Had he not jumped all over the stage I probably would have been more enthusiastic about his performance.

Alex Lambert: In direct contrast to Big Mike, Alex Lambert didn't dare move an inch during his performance of "Trouble".  The nerves are getting better with each week but they are still present.  Yet, I haven't found his lack of self confidence to become annoying yet.  As Ellen said, there's something genuine about this kid.  You know he's trying his very best and he, more than anyone, would like to find a way to be more comfortable.  I just dig this kid's voice so much. He's got such a great tone. Alex needs to work on perfecting his vocal performance from the very first note to the very last. He gets most of it right, but his phrasing could use some work, as well as his song endings.  I get the sense that like Crystal, Alex isn't as concerned with being the next big pop star. He's really just interested in making music.  IDOL and it's daunting stage is a means to an end.

HOUSE: Private Lives

This year’s Academy Awards featured a marquee match up between real-life ex-spouses Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron. With a built-in “David vs. Goliath” storyline to attract casual viewers, the Oscars reached its crescendo as the Best Director nominees were announced. After weeks of hype, the inexplicable happened. Immediately after Ms. Bigelow was named the winner, the ABC cameras cut to a wide shot of the Kodak Theater. Did the former partners speak, embrace, or acknowledge one another? The audience was left without answers, because of an ill-timed decision by the show’s director.

Next year, the Academy might want to call on Sanford Bookstaver, director of this week’s House. With a resume that includes stints at the helm of “Jericho,” “Bones,” and “The O.C.,” the veteran director’s versatility meshed well with the team at Princeton Plainsboro. In an hour full of good humor, startling revelations, and pointed commentary about the nature of community, Bookstaver did not waste a single shot.

AMERICAN IDOL Top 8 Girls Perform

It’s 5:20am on Wednesday morning and I’m just catching up on last night’s AMERICAN IDOL.  I’m fresh out of coffee so here’s to hoping that the Top 8 ladies bring something special to help me wake up. There is some serious talent this season but I’ve yet to see that breakthrough performance that really grabs my attention.  With all the singer/songwriter type of artists this season, I’m just hoping that moment comes.

Two minutes into last night’s live show and they’re already running behind? How does that happen? Ah, the pressure of the one hour performance show.  No pre-vids tonight, just straight to the performances.

Up first tonight….

Katie Stevens
Much like Haeley Vaughn, Katie is another girl who would have benefited from a year or two of experience before taking to the IDOL stage.  She has a nice voice, but there is this “choir” quality to it. She’s not a pop singer. Her voice isn’t nuanced enough.  Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” is an amazing pop ballad, but there was no life or freshness to Katie’s version.  Bravo to the judges for giving her some quality feedback tonight.  The girl has been taking their notes and trying her best, but she doesn’t know who she is as an artist so her whole performance is based on doing what she thinks the judges want her to do rather than doing what feels organic to her.

Siobhan Magnus
This girl just keeps getting better and better.  What an instrument she has. The beginning of “House of the Rising Son” was haunting and rich. Starting off the song a capella was risky but it paid off well as it forced me to concentrate on nothing else but Siobhan’s voice. She demanded my attention.  This wasn’t a safe song by any stretch of the imagination. She showed depth, range and a real step forward as an artist. Do I see a place for Siobhan Magnus in the current music scene right now? I’m not sure. But I’m most definitely coming around on her. Three out the four judges agreed with me. Simon wasn’t really loving the performance.

Lacey Brown
Argh, I’m so bummed out! Lacey performed Brandi Carlile’s “The Story”, a song that was secretly hoping that Didi Benami would take on as it’s so well suited for Didi’s voice.  It was a decent enough song choice for Lacey. Despite the performance being a snoozefest, it was the best I think I’ve ever heard Lacey. She sang it well and it did represent her as an artist well. My problem is, she lacks charisma. She has zero star potential.  Her voice is unique and almost quirky, which means you have to have something more to bring to the table if you want to be an international musical superstar.
