SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE’s Alex Wong on his Show-Ending Injury and If He’ll Return Next Season

July 9, 2010 by

It was an emotional Thursday night at SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE as judge Nigel Lythgoe announced that Alex Wong’s lacerated achilles tendon will require surgery and, therefore, he must withdraw from the competition immediately.

Wong — who was a clear frontrunner to win the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer” — spoke with reporters after the show, explaining the complications of his upcoming surgery — which he’ll undergo Tuesday — as well as the freak nature of the injury, saying he honestly doesn’t know why it happened: he’s never had achilles problems and his muscles were warm and his body felt strong at the time of the tendon tear.

So, if Wong fully heals before next season, does he intend to return to SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, since Lythgoe said that he would once again be welcomed to start during Vegas Week?

“I would love to,” Wong tells us in the video clip below. “You know, Vegas is really hard, but it’s worth it when you get on the show. So it’s a lot to give up, but I would love to be back. I feel like I haven’t finished my journey. I feel like I have so much more to learn.”

Sadly, the former Miami City ballet dancer — who gave up his Principle position in the company to pursue a spot on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE — has a long road ahead of him before he can jump back on that train.

Even if the surgery is completely successful — there is a 20% chance that it won’t be — there will be months of rehab and recovery to endure.

So, how concerned is Alex about that 20% chance of failure? And how much pain is he in?

Listen in as he explains…

What do you think?

If you were Alex Wong, would you return for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE season 8?

Feel free to express your thoughts on the subject — and to wish Alex well — in the comments section below…

Alex was the best dancer I’ve ever seen on all the seasons I’ve been watching SYTYCD…he brings goosebumps to those who watch when he performs. The show will not be the same without him. I hope he returns next season and I hope they eventually offer him a job on the show! Good luck Alex! We’re all pulling for you.

Alex was not only the best dancer on the show this season, he was one of the best dancers SYTYCD has ever had. Right up there with Benji and Danny in my opinion. Best wishes to Alex for a successful surgery, speedy and complete recovery. Hope to see you on SYTYCD next season!

I was beyond devastated that Alex was injured and could not continue his relentless ride to victory. I know how upset he must feel. He is the only reason I watch SYTYCD this season, as the other dancers are not inspiring… technically good but boring

Alex, wishing you a speedy recovery with as little pain as possible so that you may go on to wow the world when you win Season 8 of SYTYCD! And who knows, there will be more accolades in future, and you will be always Alex Freaking Wong!!! We love you! God speed!

Sucks that Alex injured himself; especially since he was doing so well. I’ve been watching Pride coverage on OURsceneTV.com to give me something else to think about.

Alex, your dancing is awesome! I loved watching you and was hoping you would win. I hope your surgery goes well and you recover 100%. I wish you well in whatever you do and hope I can see you next season! Good Luck.

I think that he could be considered an All-Star just as much as Anya is an All-Star after being voted out very early in the top 20. I’d love to see him back, but it seems that he’s been on long enough to be an All-Star. He’s definitely made his mark and I think it would be unfair to future contestants to go up against him with a built-in fan base.

Alex is one of the most versatile dancers. He blew everyone away when he so easily switched from classical ballet to one of the most amazing hip hop routines ever done. He could pursue a dance career in any genre of his choosing and excel at it beyond anyone’s imagination.
It is so unbelievably sad to hear of his injury. I am praying for him to have a full recovery so that he can pursue his promising career and continue to inspire and entertain us.
I think it would be amazing for him to return for the next season.
He is humble, endearing, and clearly is America’s and Canada’s favourite dancer, with or without the actual title.
    Speedy recovery, Alex!!

I still watch the preformance between him and twitch probably about once a week. i am a dancer myself and i cant even compare myself to him.
if there is anyway he can go back he should as i think the world would love to experience his dancing again.

J’ai vue la performance d’Alex Wong sur outta your mind. J’ai adoré. J’aimerais le revoir la saison prochaine et de réaliser son rêve. Etre le prochain gagnant de so you think you can dance saison 8. C’est plate pour lui, quand il était blessé. Mais j’espère qu’il va être au top pour l’autre saison, il est déjà dans le top 10 de la saison 8, que Nigel lui a dit.

  10. Stéphanie on January 29th, 2011 8:39 pm

Alex Wong est dans le top 10 de la saison 8. J’ai hâte de le revoir. C’est un bon danseur, il le mérite. Il doit revenir pour prouver à tout le monde ce qu’il vaut pour devenir le grand gagnant.

  11. Stéphanie on January 29th, 2011 8:46 pm
