BONES: Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan Tease the New Big Bad, Brennan’s Honeymoon Surprise, and More

September 13, 2013 by

With BONES’ premiere just three short days away, executive producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan jumped on a conference call with members of the press today.

While a ton has already been said about the premiere — and the upcoming wedding — they still had a few teases about what’s to come…

On the upcoming undercover episode: As Booth and Brennan work out their tension, the duo has to go undercover to the best/worst place possible: a couple’s retreat.

“David [Boreanaz (Booth)] and Emily [Deschanel (Brennan)] love doing Roxy and Tony so much that it’s a little disturbing,” Hanson joked.

“We haven’t seen Roxy and Tony since the second season!” Nathan pointed out.

“They love Wanda and Buck Moosejaw, but man, they really love Tony and Roxy,” Hanson laughed. “What they’re doing is going to a marriage counseling retreat, which is ironic because a) they’re not married, and b) they have this issue hanging over them. So Tony and Roxy are louder than Brennan and Booth, so they get to work out some stuff undercover while trying to catch a murderer.”

Later in the call, the idea of Angela and Hodgins doing their own undercover episode was brought up, and neither EP dismissed the possibility of that happening. Nathan pointed out Angela has had a couple of undercover assignments in the past, but Hodgins, thus far, hasn’t.

“Hodgins’ character is someone who always wants to go undercover or get a gun or go out with Booth, so that’s a lot of fun for us, because that’s something Booth doesn’t want to happen,” Nathan noted. “So when it does happen, it’s going to be a big hit.”

“And, by the way, TJ [Thyne (Hodgins)] has totally earned himself something like that, something fun,” Hanson acknowledged. “We owe the guy. He’s fantastic.”

On Pelant’s exit: Pelant’s arc may soon be over, but that doesn’t mean things are going to be peaceful for our characters: a new baddie will make their presence known soon.

“Pelant is part of uncovering our next big bad,” Hanson teased.

“There will be someone else who looms over our people in a way we have yet to see on BONES,” Nathan explained. “It’s someone who is far more ephemeral than any of our other bad guys. But as Hart says, it’s someone that comes to our attention because of Pelant.”

On an MIA wedding guest and the upcoming honeymoon: With virtually every important figure in Booth and Brennan’s life popping up for their wedding, one name will apparently be missing: Gordon Gordon Wyatt (played by the very, very busy Stephen Fry).

“He would love to [return], but Stephen Fry is busy running, I think it’s Britain and most of France,” Hanson said, mostly kidding. “It’s very tough to get him. But we promise to keep trying, and he is certainly willing [in the future].”

But the newlyweds will at least get a proper vacation for their honeymoon.

“They go to Argentina; they go to Buenos Aires on their honeymoon,” Nathan teased. “Also, we can tease this one little thing: they do go on their honeymoon, and it turns out, the entire country of Argentina is madly in love with Brennan’s books. And it takes a turn that even Brennan didn’t see coming.”

On when we’ll get the next “out of the box” episode: BONES has often delivered its finest hours when going outside the norm of the traditional procedural format, and while the first batch of episodes is more “normal,” the abnormal episodes are coming later in the season.

“We front-loaded the season with — I’m going to call them obligatory episodes: things we set up that we have to do,” Hanson explained. “So the weirder episodes, or the ‘out of the box’ episodes…are going to happen in the back-end of the season. I don’t even mean the back-end; let’s say after Christmas.”

“We do have some planned that are odd and unique that aren’t just the regular BONES,” Nathan teased. “We want to do it more and more, the older we get.”

“It’s one of the great things about a show that’s going into its ninth season: you can do that,” Hanson continued. “People are with you and you can be a little bit weird. We like them the most, and they’re often our best episodes.”

BONES’ ninth season kicks off Monday, September 16th at 8 PM on Fox.

I’d love to see another episode with all of the squints working together and one with Booth and Hodgins undercover would be hilarious.

Can’t we get a respit from serial killers for a while and get back to the regular show theme? Why introduce another one so soon after Pelant?

I love the odd ball episodes the best. Hodgins is probably my favorite character because he is hilarious. I love him. I don’t like the Pelant storyline. Not feeling that one. I didn’t see much done with Angela last season either. They said they were doing something with her artistic side. I don’t remember seeing much on that. I would have thought with Christine’s birth that Russ and Amy would be back to visit and so on. Oh well….too many good things to mix in. Some of the best episodes are the ones that aren’t the serial killers and are different. My favorite is from the first season. The Christmas episode. Love that one. Looking forward to a great season of Bones.

Hello! Spoiler Alert!! I didn’t know that Booth and Brenan were getting married. I actually love that, but I just wish it would have been a surprise on the show.

Will Jared be at the wedding?
