As CHICAGO P.D.’s eighth season comes to an end, Intelligence is faced with a case that hits very close to home in the penultimate house, “The Right Thing.”

“Every character’s integrity is challenged,” LaRoyce Hawkins (who plays Atwater) says in the video below. “And by the end of the season, we find, I think, a unit, somewhat divided by progress. What side of progress are we going to be? The side that informs our passion? Or the side that informs our purpose, which is to protect and serve?”

In the face of real-life calls for police reform—and it being an active part of the show’s current season—”it is a very unique, full-circle, kind of story,” he continues. “Depending on who we are as an audience, we can learn so much from it. Hopefully people identify them with, with whatever character is going through. And we can plant the seed for reimagining the police, the way that I think we should, especially where television is today.”

Plus, watch an exclusive clip from “The Right Thing” as Atwater, Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), and Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer) discover their informant accidentally leads the team “into a major drug operation”…

CHICAGO P.D., Wednesdays, 10/9c, NBC
