The Wheatleys had a few more tricks up their sleeves in the LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME season premiere.

After proving to be very helpful to outing criminal enterprises, Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott) was delighted to learn the charges against him were dropped—outside of the one relating to the death of Kathy Stabler.

Unfortunately for Richard, he’ll have an unplanned foe to go against: His ex-wife, Angela (Tamara Taylor), who survived the attempt on her life—albeit impaired in the aftermath of her poisoning.

But there is the quasi-lingering issue of how Kathy died. Last season, Angela said Richard tricked her, saying Elliot (Christopher Meloni) was the man who killed her child; in her grief, she claimed, she said she wanted him to pay, not knowing her ex would take out Elliot’s wife.

Richard, however, claimed Angela was an active participant—and he had tapes proving as much.

“It will be touched upon,” ORGANIZED CRIME boss Ilene Chaiken previews. “I think it probably will be resolved. But I don’t think that that there’s a lot of doubt in our minds about who killed Kathy Stabler. Richard Wheatley is Kathy’s murderer. Angela played a role, and it remains to be seen whether it was an unwitting role or malevolent role. But Wheatley was responsible.”

Of course, after he just got off on the charges the task force spent all of season 1 amassing against him, it’s fair to be skeptical about whether he’ll pay for anything. “Whether he will be held responsible is another matter,” Chaiken acknowledges. “[In the second pod of the season] we’ll go on to tell a story about Richard Wheatley that isn’t necessarily about Kathy Stabler’s murder.”

That’s also where fans should next expect Angela to factor into ORGANIZED CRIME season 2. “Ongoing, she doesn’t feature in our story until we get to the second pod,” Chaiken previews. “And then she will play a major role in the next chapter of the Richard Wheatley story.”
