[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Thursday, December 8 episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, “And A Trauma In A Pear Tree.”]

In vino veritas—which has certainly been the case for LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’s Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME’s Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) in recent episodes.

In OC’s “Whipping Post,” Elliot woke up after a night of drinking with Tia (Ayelet Zurer) to discover he had drunkenly confessed his love to a mysterious other woman. Elliot played coy—and wouldn’t reveal any details while sober—but he hasn’t exactly been shy about professing his feelings about/for his former partner. (And frequently in less-than-ideal circumstances.)

Olivia, however, has been more of a mystery. Though she had people telling her about her feelings toward Elliot in the season 23 finale, the last significant insight into her feelings about Elliot was actually a year ago, when she confronted Elliot about their dynamic being a one-way street.

But after busting men using cameras to spy on unsuspecting motel guests, Olivia and Amanda (Kelli Giddish) spent their downtime having a little girl talk. (Complete with boxed wine.)

“Can I tell you how nice it is to see you happy?” Olivia asks Amanda, who was fresh off an impromptu wedding.

“It’s so nice to allow myself,” Amanda replies. “When are you going to do the same?”

“With who?” Olivia questions.

“Stabler,” Amanda answers. “Remember how I used to joke about you two being in a motel room? And now here we are.”

Olivia gets serious. “I did feel like Stabler was my home,” she says. “But he left me, Amanda. And I’m not over it. And the thing is that I didn’t have a right, or a claim. He’s somebody else’s husband.”

“He was your partner,” Amanda replies.

“Yeah,” Olivia allows. “And I know this sounds crazy, but sometimes I think it would almost be easier…”

“If Kathy hadn’t died?” Amanda finishes. “Like she was the boundary.”

“And with her gone, there’s nothing but possibility,” Olivia admits. “Which is paralyzing.”

“If things didn’t go well, there’s so much to lose, the whole friendship,” Amanda acknowledges.
